Fixing Up Kevin's House

Kevin purchased this home in the mid '90s and raised his kids here. The house still had the original 1960s kitchen so it did not have a dishwasher.

I think selling the home with no dishwasher might be tough since it is more of a starter home and the potential buyer would not have money to gut the kitchen. The house is in a great location so we have that going for us but we agreed to do a few smaller updates so the house is more marketable.

Just a few weeks ago the new counter top was installed, along with a dishwasher and a new faucet. I kept the old nice solid stainless steel sink that would cost hundreds to replace because by golly there is nothing wrong with it.  I think it turned out nice and would no longer be a deal breaker to the potential buyer.

Last weekend we painted the kitchen a light neutral color and added this bead board trim. There had been 1985 wallpaper on this wall!!! I truly regret I have no before photos to offer you.  It was old, ugly and dirty.  Now it is fresh and stylish.  (We still need to paint that door to the garage.)  A fresh paint job really makes everything look nicer.

Working on the house all weekend with Kevin was not my favorite way to spend my time, but I have to say we work well together and having good company makes such projects a whole lot less of a drag.

When I was a girl, my father would do weekend projects and they always made him touchy so we would stay FAR AWAY!!  If his project wasn't going smoothly he would yell or even lash out at anyone near by.  At one point this weekend I sensed a familiar tension in the air as something wasn't going well.  I felt myself bracing for a hot temper to rise in Kevin.  It never did.  I then realized I was just remembering how my father would have handled the stress.  So thankful that Kevin is such a peaceful, kind person who doesn't blow up emotionally.

Pop Dies - final thoughts and feelings

When a person dies, everyone is sympathetic and they don’t mind if you cry or are preoccupied. They say nice things to you and try to sooth you if you are upset. I was already on the verge of a breakdown for a whole list of reasons that no one would have deemed worthy of their sympathy (except my loving blogger friends) and then all of a sudden I had every right to cry all damn day and you know what? I did…and I needed it! Still do.

A few people have commented “I don’t know why you are so upset; you said you two were not close.” He was still my dad, the only dad I ever had. He was around until I was 9 or so. He took my training wheels of my bike. I loved him very much. I wanted to be closer to him. I knew things would never change but it is really final when they die. You must mourn the loss of that relationship AGAIN. I wish I had more memories of my dad. I wish I had pictures of us together. I wish I had a single thing of his as a keepsake. I wish I would feel a day to day loss with him gone now because that would mean he was a part of my day to day life. People who have a “real” dad are so lucky.

I do have an old shoe rack he built for me as a child. It was made with scrap lumber and not even engineered well because it was just going into a kid’s closet but you know what…that damn shoe rack is PRICELESS to me! I already told my husband to never ever think of getting rid of it.

I can’t believe that my father and his wife, for the past 40 years, acted like they were too busy for us and now that he is dead I get the feeling that the whole world blames us for not being around my father more. My brother even said that Pop told him that he wishes we would call more. Well you know what?….I wish he would have told me that because I would have called more!

I tried to tell one of my friends about some of the family crap I was dealing with only to get brushed off. So that forces me to recognize that some of my so called friends are really not there for me….they are only fair weather friends. That is a stab in the heart too.

Husband has tried to be so nice and patient and helpful and I am grateful. BUT, true to form, he does it in the background….he is quiet and listens but he doesn’t “take care of me” like I wish he would. I know I am just being a picky bitch to say it, but it is how I feel. I am still pissed about the whole money thing. Since The Wife is now a SAHM I am just more chapped than ever that my husband said “you have to pay your own way in life”.

Forgot to share this little story earlier.  Friday night after I received the new about my father, the phone rang and it was Friss.  He never calls on Friday evening and I was so happy he did call.  (You know I can't call him right?)  When I answered the phone he was confused and he said he didn't call my number.  I told him fate had intervened because I really needed to talk to him!

I have it in my head that I don’t want to see dead bodies. I mean when a person dies I have no idea why anyone would want to gaze on the corps. The open casket seems grotesque to me and it is not how I want to remember last seeing my loved one. So when I was there Monday, I did my best to avoid looking at the casket. I want my last memory of my father to be hugging him goodbye on June 16th and telling him I love him. But then, as everyone was leaving they all went up there to say goodbye. Well I didn’t want to so I held back hoping they would all leave me there alone so I could scoot out without a glance. BUT, my brother was trying to be sweet and almost lifts me up to walk me up there so I went. I looked at the empty body and knew it was NOT my father. Pop was gone and the body that was there was just a pointless thing to me. I didn’t see my father dead….I saw a body of a dead man.

Anyhow….I loved him so very very much. I hope he knew that before he died.

Pop Dies - Tuesday After

Tuesday at like 2 am my brother fell asleep in the recliner. The other brother and his girlfriend went to bed and I was left on the couch with my pillow. The snoring was really loud and I couldn’t get to sleep. I would doze off but then the snoring would wake me. I tried to cover my ears but it didn’t work so well.

Around 5 am, my normal wake up time, I kind of gave up sleeping and went out front to phone my husband. I had NOT checked in the night before and I knew he was probably wondering what the heck was going on.

We chatted for a few minutes but the darn mosquitoes were so bad that I had to cut it short and head back indoors. Back on the couch I messed with my phone and entertained myself as best I could all the while hoping my younger brother would wake up so we could make our exit. (He was driving)

Finally around 7ish he woke up and I suggested we leave a note and sneak out quietly (so others could sleep in) and head over to see our mom. He was all for it and I giggled as we pulled away and Billy exclaimed “let’s leave those two to do whatever freaky shit they do when no one is looking!”

My mom was glad to see us and we spent the morning together but I had promised we would retrieve Linda in the morning so I made sure we were at Mary’s before noon. (Being technical about the definition of morning.) We had to drive an extra ½ hour each way to fetch Linda. Blah.

When we arrived they were both in good spirits and it was so nice to see Mary and the house. This is the house my older brother lived in for many years as he and Mary raised their 4 children. She is a very stable and loving woman from a wonderful family. She really was too good for my brother. The kids are so lucky to have her. Chuck left her not too long after Mathew (their oldest son) died in a car accident on New Year’s Eve 2000. After that, Chuck sort of freaked out and started drinking and became a real mess.

We visited with Mary for a few hours and then loaded up for the long drive back to my house. On the drive I took a much needed nap. I found out that Linda’s return flight home was actually Wednesday at 6 pm and I told her that I could not get off work to drive her to the airport. She said she would try and get a rental car so we found the Enterprise leasing and she had already made a reservation before I even told her I could not drive her. (Why she didn’t say something sooner is beyond me.) She checked out her car and followed us back to my house.

Billy stayed for a few minutes and then headed out to drive 2 more hours to his house. Originally I had planned that Billy and I would have 2 hours each way in the car alone so we could have some quality one-on-one time and that never happened. I was very disappointed about it but I think in the long run the whole occasion has brought us closer together which is a very good thing.

After Billy left, my husband had to go into work and I was left to entertain my sister. I unpacked and did some light housekeeping while she lingered nearby chatting with me. I was not mean to her but I certainly didn’t drop everything to entertain her. My 5 year old daughter wanted to show Linda her room so we went in there and hung out for quite some time.

Around 8 pm I was getting hungry and realized I had never had dinner. We all headed to the kitchen where the only food in the house was eggs. (We always have eggs since we have 6 chickens)  I offered my sister and egg sandwich for dinner. I made her and the Bean a plate and then made myself a couple of eggs too. I skipped the toast since I am always trying to cut back on carbs.

About 8:45 I told Linda that Beanie and I were headed to bed. I always go to bed at 9 pm since I always get up at 4:45. She looked a bit miffed and said she wasn’t tired and might go for a drive. She asked for directions to the airport and even quizzed me on how to get back to The City. She also asked how she could get back in the house after I was asleep. I told her I would leave the garage open for her.

As we went to bed she headed downstairs to freshen up. Later I realized she was sitting in the driveway in her rental car for a long time. I mean like 45 minutes. It was about 10pm before she actually drove off.

For some reason I had the presence of mind to go down stairs and look to see if she had taken all her belongings and sure enough….they were all gone. I came upstairs and shut the garage door. Husband had returned home by then and asked why I shut the door. I told him she would not be back and he thought that was absurd. I told him all her stuff was gone and he said “odd”. I agreed and we finally went to sleep.

Pop Dies - The Service

Monday morning I got up and finished my packing. I ventured out into the kitchen where my husband was making scrambled eggs and toast for my sister. I knew he needed to get work and Linda was sitting on her ass at the table looking smug for getting waited on.

Billy showed up right on time and we loaded stuff into the car. Linda told me she gets carsick so would need to sit in the front. Of course you do! (I saw that one coming a mile away.) I was happy to sit in back and let my brother deal with her.

For the next two hours she grilled him on his memories of Pop (not in a nice way like let’s reminisce, in a mean way like what did he do for you or not do that I can gossip about). Billy did caution her not to bad talk our mom so she went light on that subject. I sat and listened and generally did not want to get involved. Once in a while I piped up when the shit was getting so deep I couldn’t help myself.

We finally arrived in front of the funeral home and there was my older brother walking up the lot. I had not seen him in years but recognized him in an instant by the way he walked. He waved *Hi* to Billy and then went blank when he realized who was sitting by him.

We all got out of the car and walked up to the front of the building. Chuck stopped Linda and said “are you going to tell me where our mother is?” She told him that is not what she is here for. On the one hand I can see putting the fight away for a funeral, on the other hand this is the first time he has been able to talk to Linda since the abduction of his mother 4 years ago. He quickly said “don’t you think I have a right to know if she is dead or alive?” My sister stood there looking off into space and ignoring him. I decided to go find Mona and give her a hug.

Inside I found her sitting up front and I said hello and tried to hug her. She sat there very stiff and would not stand up so I could hug her proper. I then moved the box of Kleenex next to her so I could sit and I tried to hold her hand. She was not holding my hand back….she was tense and would not acknowledge me. Between sobs I told her I was sorry, thanked her for everything she did for Pop and told her I was broken hearted too. She was detached as usual. About now my sister showed up so I went to find my older brother. Poor Mona then had to talk to Linda. From the back of the room I felt bad for her.

Later I heard that Mona had been telling others that we didn’t love pop and never called or came to visit him. This was a stab in the heart. ALL of us wanted to be closer to him but had been met with an icy reception so many times that we started to just stay away. We felt we were not wanted and had grown weary of begging for his approval and attention. Chuck thinks she has always wanted to run us off so she would not have to share. Before he died she didn’t want to share him and now she doesn’t want to share his money or memories. I am sure she will pass ALL her (including my father’s) money to her children when she dies and we will end up with nothing. (I have known this all along and do not expect a thing.)

The service was very short and basically one prayer after another read by a strange man with a soothing voice who didn’t know Pop at all but spoke like he did. The man was just a funeral home employee doing his job and it seemed very impersonal. My sister of course had to ask the man if Pop had found Jesus Christ as his savior in time. The man awkwardly told her he never met my father. (BTW - Pop was an atheist.)

No one was there but Mona and her two grown children who were acting more like body guards than mourners and my siblings and a few of Chucks kids. There were no flowers or books to sign or anything. It all seemed rather odd to me.

After the service we sent Linda to visit my brother Chucks ex wife Mary. She is a saint of a woman and volunteered to take one for the team. My brother Chuck said if Linda showed up for lunch at the restaurant he was going to put a fork in her eye. After a nice meal we all went back to Chuck’s duplex to look at photo albums and really reminisce.

Chuck thinks the whole service was her send off to us kids. Like… here you go, say goodbye and I am done with you forever. I hadn’t really considered how Mona would surely be done with us now. It seemed weird….that after 40 years she never had any attachment to us at all. She really doesn’t care a bit.

Chuck still lives in his half of the duplex but he rents out the other side. He has had the same girlfriend for the last 5 years now. Her name is Karen and she is only 29 years old. She seemed pretty nice but she smoked and cursed a lot. I have a small child and the amount of drinking, cursing and smoking going on that night was way out of my league.

We sat up until the wee hours of the morning and finally hatched a plan to have an annual family reunion on the weekend after the 4th of July to coincide with Pops passing. We will all go to Arkansas where Chuck’s daughter lives since she has 9 children. We will stay in a hotel and have her kids out to the pool to play. I think Husband will like this idea because he has been saying he would like to vacation in Arkansas for a years. It is a beautiful place if you are an outdoorsy type. He can take a bike and canoe and go off on his own and I will hang with the family.

Pop Dies - Day Two

Today I woke up to 2 voice mails from my sister. She had called around midnight or later and wanted to discuss air travel. I looked at my clock and determined it was about 4 am at her place so I just decided I would call her later; still not realizing what she was really up to.

Since I was taking Monday and Tuesday off work to go out of town for the service, I decided I would go into the office for an hour or so and check messages and be sure that nothing was left hanging. Then I had planned on going for a run.

Once I got to work, I found out that our accounting system was down. An automatic updated had messed things up. I tried and tried to figure out how to fix it and finally gave up and called our IT guy.  He and I worked on the phone for a while and still could not get it fixed. I finally left around 9 a.m. having accomplished nothing; no run, no work projects and the accounting system still down.   BUT Husband needed to go into work so I had to get home to watch the girl.

About this time I got a text message from my sister’s daughter. It said “sorry for the last minute notice but Linda got on a plane this morning and should arrive there around 2 pm.” THIS SET ME INTO A HUGE TAILSPIN. I did not have time for her and her BS. Why the hell would she come here when the funeral is about 2 hours away?

In panic mode I tried to call her and reached no one. What the hell was I going to do with her for the rest of the day? The rest of the trip? I don’t have time for this I have way too much going on!! I phoned my mother because we were staying with her Monday night. She told me without hesitation that my sister was not welcome at her house. And I knew my older brother was going to be super pissed off if I showed up with Linda. They are in a huge huge fight.

Let me just fill you in on that story:

Back around Thanksgiving 2009 Linda showed up in town with her weird long bearded hippy boyfriend. They stopped by my house and I was nice to them. I am always nice to her even though she is crazy and gets on my nerves. I figure I see her once every 10 years for a day or so and I can afford to be gracious. (Really I think of it as being kind to the mentally ill)

I found out later why she was in town….it was not just to visit. You see, my older brother Chuck had been caring for their mother, Simone for years. She lived on one side of a duplex he owned, and he lived on the other side. She was born in 1924 so she was getting very old and was not in good health. He was still working full time and became concerned that she should not be home alone all day so he made arrangements to move her to an assisted living apartment. There she would have access to nurses and help 24-7. He did it to keep her safe and for her own good. Well, Linda thought it was terrible and had hatched a plan to come rescue her. So while she was in town visiting she went to visit her mom, who was in a wheel chair, singed her out for a visit and left the retirement villa and took her to the airport and took her back to California with her; leaving all her clothes and belongings behind. NO ONE had seen or heard from either of them since!

Chuck is convinced that his mother is dead since she was not in good shape 4 years ago when Linda kidnapped her. How nutty is that….to not even know if your own mother is dead or alive!?!?!

When 2 o’clock (time to pick up Linda) rolled around I was back at the office working on the computers again with a 5 year old bouncing around just to keep it all more irritating. The IT guy had a solution and I was turning machines on and logging in for him. He was remotely installing the fix. I texted Linda and told her I would get there when I could.

I decided the simple solution was to take her to a hotel and drop her off and be on my way. I would then proceed about my day like normal and we could pick her up in the morning for the drive into the city. I really felt I did not owe her a lot of attention since I had not agreed to this whole plan at all.

At the airport I asked her why the hell she didn’t just fly into the city. She said she wanted to ride with us (of course).   I asked her where she would stay Monday night and she said she had no plans. I told her I didn’t know where she could stay either. I wanted her to understand that I wasn’t going to take care of her and she needed to figure some shit out.

She wanted to go to Denny’s because she was hungry so I dumped her off there and told her to call me when she decided which hotel to go to and I would take her over.

She called me back hours later….it must have been 7 pm or so and wanted me to pick her up. She wanted to talk about where she was staying. By now I had most of my stuff done and was in no mood to talk. I took her home and showed her the guest room and went to bed.

You have to understand that she has been mooching off people her whole life.  She is NOT poor and easily could have flown into the city, gotten a room and a rental car and not been an imposition to anyone but instead she seems to derive some pleasure out of seeing what she can get out of people.

Pop Dies - Day One

Last night I picked up Beanie and went straight home.  She wanted a grilled cheese sandwich for dinner and I got busy doing other stuff and accidentally burned it black on one side.  So, having been trained to not waste food, I ate it and made her a new one.  This turned out to be a super lucky mistake because not long after this I got a phone call from my father’s wife, Mona, she left a message that said Pop had died.  I couldn’t eat a thing after that and it was probably for the best that I had some food in me since I started on a bottle of wine about this time.

My first reaction was to drop the phone and find my husband and sob uncontrollably on his shoulder.  I don’t know how to explain it but I was so shocked and overwhelmed that I just broke down.  For some reason it was the last thing I expected at that moment.  I had assumed that the strange phone number was a sales person.   I did however know he was really sick because I had gone to see him just a few weeks ago for father’s day.  **This Post**

WOW am I glad I went to see him and hugged him and told him I love him.

After what seemed like an eternity I finally let go of my husband and then Beanie asked him why Mommy was crying and when he told her she too sobbed.  I felt awful….she had gone with me on father’s day so she knew exactly who we were talking about.  She is at an age where death is very scary to her.  I hugged my baby.

Over the next few hours I told Monster and Ramone and all my Facebook friends.  I also tried to track down my sister who has been in a sort of hiding from the family.  In my grief I really wanted to locate someone who loved my father as much as I did so we could share our heart ache.  Everyone I told, even the people that knew him, didn’t seem upset at all.  Understandable since they were not close to him.  No one was close to him except his wife.

Finally I went to bed and fell asleep….or did I pass out.  The bottle of wine was gone.  Around 12:30 am my phone rang and I saw it was my sister Linda.  I picked up the phone.  Finally a person to talk to that loved pop as much as I did.

(Refresher….My father’s first wife was Simone (pretty French woman– they met during WWII) and they had Chuck (1946) and Linda (1948).  Later pop gave Simone the boot, married my mom (the intelligent one) and had me and my little brother Billy.  When I was about 10 Pop left my mom for Mona (hoity toity one) and they have been married ever since - almost 40 years.)

It didn’t take long for me to surmise that Linda was NOT feeling like I was.   She seemed mostly like her normal self.  She wanted to talk, but seemed to be dragging up the same old conversations she always dredged up.  Her favorite topics are telling me how her life got messed up when my mom moved in and how Pop was her hero when she was a girl.  How he raised the two older children and then was not interested in us because he had already raised his family.  How my mom was a terrible mother, etc. etc. For some reason I sat and talked to her for almost two hours.  I guess I felt like I should after all, we had both just lost our father.

By the time we got off the phone I was more exhausted than ever, both physically and mentally but I was also very wound up.  All I kept thinking was “what is the point?”  My husband was awake when I came back to bed and in my sorrow and grief I started to sob and curse and tell him all kinds of dark things.  I told him how almost daily I wish I would die in car accident so I could escape this life that seems to be so much more work than it is worth for me.  How I am depressed and have been depressed and should just except the fact that I am a depressed sick person and quit trying to be ok or act normal.  It went on for a long time.   He listened but didn’t say much.  I know he was trying to be kind.

It was about 3:30 or so when we finally went back to sleep and my alarm went off at 5 am as planned.  I got up and tried to make some breakfast and jumped on Facebook to tell my friend I would NOT make the morning bike because I was operating on only about 4 hours of sleep and a shit ton of grief.

Then, I started to feel better and decided it would do me good to ride my bike so I threw my cycling clothes on and rushed out the door.  When I arrived at the assigned start location all my friends were super nice and Tater even gave me a big hug.  I found out 3 of the girls were only doing 32 miles so I decided to stick with them.  The boys left to do more like 50 miles but I knew I was probably too “messed up” to keep up with them.

We weren’t far down the street when K-Rob told me her dad had died just a few years ago and she took it really hard even though he had not raised her.  She was so awesome to talk to.  I was thrilled I had gotten out of the house.

I biked and talked and generally had a nice ride.  A couple of times I found myself away from the group and I started to think too much and felt like sobbing so I got back next to one of my girls and said “talk to me so I don’t cry” and they did.

After my bike I went straight to the store and got another bottle of wine.  I also purchased myself a few treats to eat...I felt like spoiling myself.  I got a loaf of crusty artisan bread, some fancy olives from the olive bar and a tub of feta cheese crumbles.  (I know wine is a depressant…and I just didn’t care.)

Next we were schedule to meet Carrie and her mom Valarie at the pool.  I called and told them I was packing a picnic but they should bring a drink.  They showed up with Sonic drinks and the kids, much to my surprise, were pretty happy about the cheese, bread and olives.

I admitted to Valarie there was wine in my water bottle and she said she loves a good dry white wine.  I told her this happens to be a cheap white wine that I had poured over ice or I would offer her some.  We agreed that soon we would indeed share a GOOD bottle of wine.

The day flew by and we all had a very nice time.  Valarie told me she wanted to try cycling so I offered to loan her my old Giant Iguana that I purchased when Rocco and I first started dating because he wanted to bike with me.  Tomorrow I will take her the bike and all four of us (little girls and moms) can ride around her street for a bit.

After we went home I started to feel very sad again.  It seems like if I stay with people I can be distracted but left by myself I crumble to a ball of tears because life just feels so sad and disappointing.  I keep thinking I want my Papa….I love my Papa.  I will never ever see or talk to my Papa again.  It’s so final.  I mean I never thought things would change between us but when a person is dead you have to admit that any chances of change are certainly over.  It just seems weird….like a leg has been chopped off my life’s chair.

At some point today I received a text that the funeral would be at 10 am on Monday.  No actually it was not a funeral it was a memorial service.  Also, today while we were at the pool, Mona, my dad’s wife tried to call me again.  She left another message.  She sounded so sad.  I tried to call her back because I wanted to tell her how bad I felt and that I was thinking of her.  She didn’t answer though.  That woman loved my dad VERY much and will be lost without him.  They have always been inseparable.  Once they retired I don’t think they EVER did anything without each other.  That is the kind of love I want!

Late in the evening, past my bedtime my sister called me again.  This time I was not going to spend a lot of time chit chatting.  She asked if I had been given the funeral information….I assumed she was going to fill me in if not.  I told her I had received a text from Jim (Mona’s son from her first husband).  She asked me more questions and at some point I told her that my little brother Billy was going to pick me up on his way to the service and we were just going to ride together.   (In hindsight I am sure she did not know when the service was and tricked me into telling her.) She told me she was pissed it was such short notice and that getting a flight would be near impossible.  I told her I am sure everyone would understand if she couldn’t make it.  She seemed to want justification for not coming.  She told me that Mona doesn’t like her and I knew she was feuding with her brother Chuck.   At some point I told her she could ride with us but I also thought that it was an insane idea that she try to arrive here rather than in the bigger city where the service would take place.  Our little airport is tiny and not many flight go there.  Anyhow, I was tired, still buzzed on wine and trying to be nice.  I felt sure she was not coming and was just telling someone so the family would understand.  I had no idea I was creating a HUGE mess that we all would have to deal with for the next 4 days!

Father's Day

Today I drove 2 hours (each way) to go visit my father.  The visit went well and I am glad I went.  While I was there he quipped about how his kids don’t keep in touch or something to that effect.  I understand why this little old man in frail health might actually appreciate it if his offspring showed an interest in him.  BUT, I have to say, he spent his whole life being separate from us so he has no one to blame but himself.

My father (Pop) was born in 1925 so that makes him 88.  He is OLD….and his health is poor. The only reason I went to see him was because I thought it might make the old guy feel good.  (I think it did.)  I really have no need/interest in visiting him for myself.  It’s far too late to actually start a relationship with him.  I just went to visit so he would feel loved.  I hate to think of him dying all sad and thinking his kids didn’t love him.

As a daughter, I have always loved my father.   But I am also very aware that he did not treat us like a father should…….that he didn’t do “Dad” things with us, for us.  It makes me sad that for the most part I never had a father in my life but I don’t hold it against him.  I believe he meant well and did the best HE could.

My earliest memories of Pop are of him doing projects around the house.  Digging a hole to patch a leak in the basement or trimming the bushes with a piece of twine to signify the perfect height.

Pop is a retired mechanical engineer.  He worked at a large aircraft manufacturer after putting himself through college on the G.I. Bill.  He was successful and proud of himself.  I remember with fondness how my little brother and I would rush to great him when he returned home from work each night wearing a suit and tie, carrying a brief case.

When I was in 4th grade, one Saturday morning, my father unceremoniously announced that he was moving out.  He backed up a rental U-haul truck, took his desk, his bar from the basement and his clothing and left.  I was young enough that I only understood some of what was going on.  I was old enough that I was sad and hurt by the whole event.  I don’t think either of my parents felt I was old enough to be impacted by the whole thing.  Certainly no one seemed to worry about our (my little brother also) feelings.

Later I would understand that he moved directly into an apartment with his new girl friend.  Her name is Mona and they are still married to this day.  (I found out they got married when he showed up wearing a wedding ring.) At this point I am grateful she is there to take care of him.  He could not live on his own in his current deteriorated condition.

After he moved out, my father, being a fairly responsible person, would always pay his child support on time.  He also chose to pick us up once a week for an hour and take us to a local fast food restaurant.  This was his way of still being a part of our lives.  It started out that we would have lunch on Saturday at Steak-n-shake with him.  Later it changed to dinner on Tuesdays at McDonalds.  That was it….one hour a week.  He would actually check his watch and return us to our mother at the end of that hour.  (I think Mona was waiting for him.)

The only time we were ever invited to his house was at Christmas and maybe our birthdays once or twice.  Usually birthdays were done at nicer restaurants where Pop would actually eat with us rather than just watch us eat like he usually did at McDonalds.

After we were 16 or so we no longer had our weekly hour long visits.  No doubt we as teens had other priorities.  As young adults we would still go to Pop’s for Christmas until one year (2001?) he announced that he and Mona were getting too old to host the event.  And that was it….the end of any family get togethers.

Since then, if I wanted any contact with my father it was up to me to call and ask to visit him; which for some reason always felt like begging to see him.  He would in fact turn down our visits if they were spur of the moment requests and not planned out well in advance.  You didn’t just drop by to say hi!

In 2002 or around then, he had some heart problems and had open heart surgery.  I found out a month later when I received a post card from his wife explaining that he was now home and recovering and everything went well so he thought we should know about it.  At the time I was shocked and saddened that he felt this was the appropriate way to communicate with us.  I assume he didn’t want to upset or worry anyone but really it just made me feel that much more like an outsider in his life.

Today he told me that my older half brother, Chuck, called to wish him a Happy Fathers day but that my older half sister, Linda, and my younger brother (Bill) had made no contact with him in quite some time.  He even said that Chuck doesn’t know where Linda or his mother is living these days.

I had tried to get my younger brother to go with me today, (text, emails and phone convo with his gf) but he declined to ever respond to my request at all.  He wasn’t even polite enough to tell me no thanks.  He just ignores me most of the time.  Frankly my family just sucks and I am really sick of it!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just remembered what he actually said "when I divorced your mother you kids divorced me!"  The man is out of his mind!!!  My little brother was 5 at the time and doesn't even remember him living with us.
Reflecting on my Upbringing
My father was abusive to me as a kid, but I am sure he didn’t think he was.  He was born in 1925 and certainly had different ideas of what constitutes abuse, what parenting is about or how to raise a child to become a productive citizen.
I am sure he feels that children are not quit human yet.  They are not the same as a grown up and do not have the same rights and privileges as adults do.  Children are to be seen and not heard. What children think and say is irrelevant.
Spare the rod spoil the child is not a saying I remember him ever spouting, however, I know darn well he felt that physical discipline was acceptable and he dished it out as he felt necessary.  I remember the worst beating I ever got.  It was for telling him “no”.  I don’t remember why I said no to him but I did so I got punished.  Children are not allowed to disobey or backtalk adults.  On this day I was sitting on the steps to the basement and he was down stairs.  He may have been working out; he had a small gym area set up.  I said the dreaded insolent word and he proceeded to chase me up the steps so he could beat me.  I ran for my life and he chased me the length of the house.  Of course, he stopped long enough to grab the paddle on his way to my bed room.  In my room I cowered on the bed as he beat me with the paddle.  I remember thinking this was it, the one that would see me dead.  This time he would not stop until he killed me.  I cried so hard I was gasping for air.
I guess he stopped…….I don’t remember anything else from that day.  I just remember thinking he was going to kill me.  Now, all grown up, I understand that children should not fear for their lives.  But, as a kid it was just the way it was.  I’m sure my father would tell you that it is a very good thing to fear our parents and that I was being a ridiculous child to actually think he would kill me.  (I have heard stories that he sent my older brother to the hospital.)
Pop was moody and prone to violent anger.  As kids my mother, younger brother and I “walked on egg shells” if he was home because we did not want to anger or provoke him in any way.    When I review my life I always think this “training” has been huge to who I am and how I handle my relationships.  I tend to bend over backwards to keep the peace even when it is not in my best interest.  I have been so deeply conditioned to avoid confrontation at all costs.  It really is ridiculous and people she not be raised in constant fear.
He would hit me at the dinner table so hard that he would knock me off my chair and onto the floor.  This happened more times than I can count.  We had metal, swivel chairs so landing on the legs was particularly painful.
Now that I am grown up, I also find it odd that we had whole areas of the house that were off limits.  We were not allowed to go in certain rooms.  Basically, we were allowed in our bedrooms, the kitchen and bathroom and the family room and that was it.  We would be punished if we went into the dining room, the living room, my parents’ bedroom or the library as my father called it.  It was actually his home office with a desk and the encyclopedia in there.  I remember standing in the doorway of these rooms and trying to talk to one of my parents.  I didn’t dare cross into the room.  I can remember one time and only one time that I actually climbed in bed with my parents.  Maybe that is why my daughter is always welcome in my room or my bed.  I want her to feel loved and accepted not isolated like I did.
My father is an alcoholic too.  He is the type that drinks till he blacks out then finally passes out.  He just can’t seem to know when enough is enough.  Once shit faced drunk he would then do other stupid things.  The list is long but here are some highlights: try to drive my brother home and pass out behind the wheel.  Thank god my older sister insisted she ride along.  Run his car into the house when trying to pull into the garage.  Throw my infant son up in the air until he hits the ceiling.  Baby cries in pain as Grandpa laughs at the mistake.  (It feels very wrong to call him Grandpa.) He would also hurt our pet dog for fun.
When I was in the 4th grade my father ditched us to run off with his new lover (now wife).  From that point on he basically had nothing to do with us.  This too was very hard on me as a child.  I have serious abandonment and betrayal issues to this day and I believe it all started when my father just left me all of a sudden and I was left to deal with my feeling all by myself because I was just a kid and my parents didn’t realize how hard it was on me.  After all, kids aren’t real people with real feelings.
I remember one time I saw a child walking out of the big toy store with her father and a new bicycle and I thought to myself “I wish I had a father who was interested in me and would do nice things for me.”  I always remember wishing I had a REAL father.
It was always my understanding that my father’s parents were poor, uneducated, hard hearted people who were just trying to survive the great depression.  I don’t think that doling out love and acceptance was anything even remotely on their mind.  I am sure my father was a much better parent to me then his parents were to him.
As I was growing up, I made mental notes about how I was not going to do this or that like my parents did.  I even memorized little sayings to reinforce these ideas.  For example “people are more important than things” is one of my go to lines for when I catch myself putting off my kids so I can do my own project.
My parents meant well.  I think they did the best they could.  I know they emphasized getting a good education and getting a college degree.  I have always been grateful for that.  They also taught me to be tough, responsible and self reliant; all good qualities. But, at the same time I know I have issues that started back then.  And, I always seem to identify with people who were abused as children, especially by their father.
Unconditional Love
When I was a child my father was very demanding and judgmental and I desperately wanted his love and approval and would do just about anything I could to earn it.
I would also get very upset with myself when I failed to get his approval.......when I disappointed him or let him down.
I find now that even as an adult I think I try so hard to make the people I love happy in the same sort of effort to earn/keep their love by pleasing them.  And it equally pains me if I feel I let them down, even if by accident.
This is a habit that I can’t seem to control.
I think I often put their needs before mine.....because my need for approval is too great.
I am sure this contributes to me being hard on myself in other areas too.  I want to be too perfect and can’t seem to love myself despite my flaws.
If I wasn’t good enough for my father, then who could I be good enough for?
~~
I often think that as very small children we need (and generally get) unconditional love and approval.  (Think about how we shower our new babies with love just for showing up and pooping all over.)  Then as we age, that unconditional outpouring of love fades and we miss it.  (Probably with good reason or no one would ever leave home. Ha)
I always wonder if that is not what I crave from my significant other.  I just want someone to be crazy about me for just being me.
I Love my Pop!
Last night I had a vivid dream that I was holding my father and didn’t want to let him go. It felt real, we felt close and the dream seemed to last a long time. I was sure I could not let go or I would lose him forever. I awoke feeling closer to him than I ever have. I missed him and wanted to phone him but it was 5 am.
I am pretty sure any day now I will get a phone call that he has passed away. He has been in poor health for years now so it would be no surprise.
I don’t normally dream about him. In fact, I generally don’t think about him at all. We have never been close. My father divorced my mother for another woman when I was in the 4th grade. After that he had very little contact with us instead choosing to focus on his new wife. My mother was devastated and I felt abandoned.
When I was a young adult I struggled with our relationship and about 10 years ago I just quit contacting him at all. He never actually cared that much to be a part of my life and I was tired of trying to a part of his. It made me sad but he was happy with his life so I figured why bother him. He doesn't call me either.
We have seen each other once since then at Christmas. Here are my links to my posts on that
I will always wish I had a father who made me feel loved and enjoyed sharing his life with me. However, I have the dad I have and I accept that.
AND, I will always love him. After all, he is my Pop.
I thought I might call him to see how he was, but now that some time has passed I don’t feel comfortable making that call. I will just keep waiting for someone to call me.
Everything AS PLANNED!
So I did go and visit my father on Saturday as planned and everything went well. Here is the whole story…….but to warn you……it’s not exciting.
Friday night after work, I had my husband pick up the baby and I went to Gymboree to cash in on the big sale they were having. I purchased a pair of pink pants to go with a top that Grandma had bought and I also spotted a dress on clearance that I loved. I found leggings to go with it and got matching socks for only 75 cents. The whole outfit on sale was well worth it. She looked adorable in it. AND, it was so nice to shop without a toddler constantly distracting me and complaining. Thank You Daddy!
When I arrived home, I tried the pink pants on the kid and they looked terrible. Big bottomed girls should not wear tight pink pants…..duh! So, I vowed to return or hopefully exchange them first thing in the morning.
Saturday morning, I got up, packed and prepared to head out of town. At 9 am on the dot, as planned, I headed to the mall to do my exchange. I took the baby with me to try on pants. I was not leaving until I found some I loved and we did try on quite a few pairs before buying these.
I then got gas and picked up the older kids at 10 am on the nose just as planned. They were perky and dressed nice and we had an easy drive to St. Louis. Once in town, we stopped at White Castles for lunch because I just had to have some…. besides, Beanie loves French fries.
After lunch, we cleaned up and drove to my father’s house. We arrived right at 1 as planned. At this point I am feeling like the luckiest mom on the planet. I mean, 3 kids in tow and all is going smoothly!
My father and his wife were nice to us and we sat and chatted and we all took turns keeping the toddler under control. It was a bit scary since they have expensive figurines everywhere and art on the floor. Even the pillows look expensive but I let Beanie throw them on the floor anyway. At some point all the kids asked for snacks and drinks and I cringed. Mona (the wife) got up and helped them in the kitchen. I think they were fairly polite and not too piggy.
We left at 3 as planned. That was just long enough. The toddler would have come completely unglued if we had stayed any longer. We all hugged and waved goodbye and I left feeling pretty good.
Saturday evening, we hung out at my mom’s house and she took the older kids to Kohl’s and got them a few articles of clothing which was nice of her. They are always in need of school clothes.
Sunday morning, I ran a few errands then we had a big breakfast at my moms and as soon as Beanie showed signs of needing a nap, we all loaded back up and headed for home. The baby fell asleep right off as planned and then I let Monster drive as soon as we were out of the thick of city traffic. I relaxed and even dozed a few minutes on the drive home. In no time we were there and I was feeling rested and ready to enjoy the balance of my weekend.
The Reunion is Scheduled
On Sunday, my sister borrowed my phone to call our father and make arrangements to go visit him later in the week. She talked to him for a few minutes and then says “Hey Pop, Judi wants to say hi” and handed me the phone. I am thinking “oh shit, what will I say?”
The night before, Linda and I had stayed up talking until 3 am. She explained how Pop and Mona had Mona’s kids and Grand kids over all the time and how she thought that Mona had been systematically keeping us away in the hopes of having my father all to herself. For the most part, my father’s wife has never been particularly nasty to me and I have nothing against the women. On the other hand, the scenario is certainly possible and my poor father could just be getting bullied by his wife.
Wait a minute! My father the victim? Not likely! I really find it hard to believe that he would purposefully be indifferent to us in order to keep her happy unless it was what he wanted. I guess what I am saying is, one thing I am pretty sure about is that my father does what he wants and does not let other people run his life.
Then again, people change and relationships are tricky. In the final analysis, he seemed so genuinely happy to talk to me on the phone that day and he asked me to come visit………so………I am going.
This weekend on Saturday from 1-3 pm I am going to go visit my father for the first time in almost 10 years. I have invited my two older kids to go along and they both want to. The Bean is going for sure since she goes where I go. I am not real excited to show up with 3 kids at his door step. I am pretty sure that my father and his wife won’t be either. However, I can’t tell them they are not invited to go see their grandfather when it will probably be the last time they ever see him alive.
He had a heart attach a few years back and has never been the same ever since. He is just getting really old and is not in good health so it won’t be long until we have to gather to bury his body. I won’t have to sort his belongings as his wife will keep them and there will be no keepsakes for me I am sure. The only things I have that my father ever gave me, if you can even call it that, are an old wooden, homemade shoe rack from when I was a kid and some wine glasses and a big bowl that I fished out of a pile of junk that was headed to the Salvation Army one time when I was at their house. That’s it!
All about Pop
My father was born on February 3rd, 1925 to a couple of poor, alcoholics living in a coldwater flat in downtown St. Louis. He was the oldest of 4 children (2 boys and 2 girls). There are stories, not sure if they are true, that they would steel food so they did not go hungry. When he was 11 years old, his father died, presumably due to alcoholism. As a teen ager, he was drafted into WWII, and before he left he made sure to marry his sweet heart and knock her up. Later, the baby was still born.
While my father was off in France fighting the war, he met and had an affair with a women named Simone. Her husband was in jail at the time. After Pop returned to the states, he found out that Simone was pregnant with his child. So both Pop and Simone got divorced and Simone and my older brother Chuck, who was born(in 1946)by then, moved to the United States. My father married Semone and adopted Chuck and two years later they had my older sister Linda (born in 1948).
My father went to college on the GI bill and received a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He got a job at McDonald Douglas Corp. designing fighter jets for government contracts. He also got a pilot’s license, which was a lifelong dream of his. As a child, we always flew our little 4 seater airplane to Grandma and Grandpa’s house! My father and Simone also purchased a lovely 4 bedroom ranch home in the best school district. They were living the American dream!!
Then, my father craving a more intellectual partner met my mother at work and started an affair with her. He later divorced Simone and married my mother on August 1st, 1964. My mother did not have children and was over 30 so she set about starting a family right away. I was born on August 29th the following year. My brother Chuck was in Vietnam fighting the war, so they moved his stuff out and made his room the nursery. Some years later he confided that he didn’t like me much back then, taking his room and all. When I was about 3 ½ years old, my little brother, Bill, was born. I actually remember the day he came home from the hospital and I remember feeling jealous!
Pop wore a suit and carried a brief case and we thought he was very successful. Later, as an adult, I learned that my father was a smart guy, but my mother is a REALY intelligent person. She is freaky smart. She has an Electrical Engineering degree and graduated with honors in only 3 years!! She told me that classes were free after 21 credit hours…..so she loaded up.
As a child, I worshipped my father, but I guess all little girls do. My father was not one to play with us or lavish us with love and attention. Mostly, we were trained to be good and not bother him. If we were lucky, we could watch him do a household project or sit by him and watch “All in The Family”, which was one of his favorite shows. I remember we were not allowed to talk during the news, so we would wait for the commercial and then yammer away.
He did teach me to ride a bicycle…..sort of. He took the training wheels off and gave me a push and I just did it; started riding. I can’t recall what I was thinking at the time, but I would not be surprised if it was “better get this right or I might be in trouble!” He certainly ruled by fear.
We had a modern kitchen table with swivel chairs. The chairs had metal leg with four “feet” that stuck out. If you got in trouble at the kitchen table, he would smack you so hard you might fall off the chair and land on the metal feet, which was very painful. This must have happened to me many times because I remember it so well. My brother Chuck told me that he too remembered being smacked off those yellow swivel chairs by Pop.
Mostly, I remember the feeling that everyone was always on their best behavior so as not to piss him off. I refer to it as “walking on egg shells”. I am sure my mother warned us over and over again not to do this or that because it would make him angry and no one wanted him angry!
Then one Saturday, it was about 1975, my father got up, rented a small U-Haul and loaded up a few choice belongings and left. I did not understand what was really happening. They told me he was leaving, but I think I assumed he would be back. It took awhile for the reality to set in. My little brother doesn’t remember this day, but I do.
After that, my father would pick us up on Tuesday at 5 pm and take us to McDonald’s (probably our choice) and buy us dinner. He did not eat. We would sit and chat and then at 6 pm he would return us to our mom’s house. We never went to his house except Christmas and Fathers Day and we NEVER spent the night, not once. He mailed my mother the child support checks like clockwork and paid for part of my brother college, per the divorce decree, but usually if you asked him for help or money, he would turn you down.
One day he showed up on Tuesday wearing a wedding ring and I asked and he told me that he had gotten married. I recall feeling slighted that he did not tell us about it before it happened and then, he did not mention it until I actually asked. We were just not part of his life anymore and that hurt.
Many years later, I knew the whole story. He had met a woman at work. I think she was an executive secretary. She was not young or beautiful, but I guess he thought she was classy, that she was a step up from my mother. At the time he moved out of our house, she also left her husband and they moved into an apartment together. They are still married to this day!
When I was 30, I moved a few hours away from where my father was living and when I was in town I would call and ask if I could stop by. More than once, he told me that he was busy with the shopping or trimming his hedges or whatever, so, “no” we could not stop by.
When he and Mona got older, they decided to stop the Christmas and Fathers day get together because they were too much work. All four of his kids offered to help so it would be less work for them, but they were not interested in making it happen.
The last time I was there (probably in 2001), I really felt as though they did not want me around. And it really hurt my feelings. I cried all the way home. So I decided I would never put forth an effort to see him or call him again. I decided that it was always disappointing and painful so why bother. I was open to him making an effort to be a part of my life, but I knew that was not going to happen. He NEVER called me, not once to talk or ask to visit.
So, years went by and he never contacted me and I did not contact him. At some point, my sister asked me why I hated Pop. I told her I love him and asked why she thought I did not. She said “you never call him or visit”. I said “he never calls me either!”
My Family is "Complicated"!
So my sister from California showed up out of the blue this weekend. We sat up until 3 am talking. She sort of tricked me into talking to my dad on the phone. Now I am thinking I may go visit him. This is turning into a BIG deal. I am too busy to do a full blown write up……but I will keep you posted.
From left to right, my sister's boyfreind, my older 1/2 sister (same father), Bean and me.
Also.....I must add.......My husband still loves me even after meeting my sister......I am totally impressed.
He must REALLY love me!
