A change of View

Over Thanksgiving weekend back in 2002 I moved into the house I now live in. It is a nice house, but the thing that sold me on it, is the fact that it is located on 20 fully wooded acres. It is like living in a national park. (I bought this house all by myself and I am proud that I could afford to do so.) When I moved into the house I was single and I put my bed up under the window so I could look out and see the trees and the stars. This is something that the x-boyfriend and I used to do. We used to joke that we wanted a bay window in the bedroom to put the bed in so we could have a better view of the night time sky. So for the next few years, I slept by myself and by the window. Having the bed under the window was not the most esthetic furniture arrangement, but I didn’t care because I treasured my window time. I would also leave the window open so I could hear the frogs and owls at night. If it was cold out, I would just leave it open an inch so I could still smell the night air and hear the coyotes. One night I actually heard a tree fall in the woods. It took me a minute to figure out what the sound was because it sounded like fireworks….there was a lot of popping involved. One night I heard the coyotes fighting and it was downright scary. One time I looked out in early dawn and saw a buck mating with a female deer. Another morning I remember I woke up with my head so far up in the window that the first thought that came to mind was “why am I outside?” Then I realized I was in bed but only one inch from my window screen. I also would see my huge owl in the winter when the leaves were down. I bet he weighed close to 30 pounds. He had a huge wing span so he was easy to spot as he flew in the woods.

I took this photo when we were dating so he was not living at my house then. My window is on the left there......golly I do miss it.

Now that I am married, we have the bedroom painted so you can’t see the foot marks where I used to prop my feet on the wall while I was gazing out the window. The bed is now placed in the “proper” location with the windows at each side of the head board. When I lay in bed on my side, I can see out the patio door which is mostly a view of the deck and a little bit of sky. But, for the most part, I can’t see outside and I don’t have the window open. We live like civilized adults should with our bedroom looking tidy and well decorated. My husband did not like the bed shoved into the corner so I had to climb over him to get in so when he moved in we rearranged and set it up the way he wanted it. I often miss my window time and wonder what is going on out in the woods now that I have lost touch, but I would still rather have my husband to sleep with than be perched in my window sill by myself.

More recent photo after he moved into the house.

No Mick! Time is not on my side.

A few months ago I did a post about how I was considering plastic surgery.

Go here to read it: http://lifeistooshortandtoolong.blogspot.com/2009/07/decisions-and-incisions.html

Well, I did it. Last Monday, December 7th I reported to the Outpatient Surgery Center for a breast lift and a tummy tuck. No insurance involved, I had to pay cash! The surgery was scheduled to take 4 hours, but I was done in 3 and the surgeon said it went great. I took the whole week off work because they warned me that I would be sore, have drain tubes in my stomach and need to walk bent over for the first 7-10 days.

Monday after surgery, my husband brought me home and put me on the couch where I watched TV and dozed off and on. I was in some pain, but not enough to try the pain meds the doctor had me get from the pharmacy on the way home. Pain meds have made me very sick to my stomach in the past and my stomach was already feeling pretty icky. So, I took no pain medication and was OK with that.

Tuesday morning I went back to the doctor for a 24 hours check up. He took the dressings off my breasts and as I looked down, I was totally amazed. There on my chest were two perfectly rounded and firm, perky looking boobs. Even with stitched and tape on them they looked amazing. They looked perfect. I gasped at the doctor and declared him my savior. I spent the rest of the day texting all my friends that my boobs looked amazing. And, I have to tell you that they never really hurt. Not any more than a bad bra day with pokey under wires hurts. I did not have implants and that may make a big difference, but at this point, I am recommending that EVERYONE who is not happy with their boobs should go get a boob job. It is the best!

The next few days I lazed around the house and read and watched TV. Getting up and about was out of the question because I was not supposed to stand up straight and after walking hunched over for a day, your back gets so sore you can hardly move. The back was screaming if I got up so I tried to stay down. When they do a tummy tuck, they also do some sort of shoring up of your stomach muscles. This has been the painful part. And, trying to lay down when you have all this trauma to your stomach is not fun. I am usually glad I don’t have a big old La-z-boy recliner taking up half my living room, but this week, that would have been the thing to have. I did manage to get comfy on the couch by putting my back on the arm and my legs down the couch with some pillows under them.

Friday it was back to the doctor to get the drain tubes removed and the dressing finally came off my abdomen. Now, this was unpleasant and the tape they had used was like getting a free wax job as it came off. I looked down to see a huge cut across my stomach and it is well above my panty line. Not sure I like where he put that.....will show for sure in most clothes! And it is swollen and sore and looks like it is not my stomach. Not thrilled so far, but it has only been a week so we will see how it looks in another month or so. On the bright side, I don’t have rolls of skin on my tummy despite the fact I am 5 pounds under my previous “skinny hot” weight.

So, I am back at work today. I am still a bit sore and trying to sit mostly, but not too bad.

Everything AS PLANNED!

So I did go and visit my father on Saturday as planned and everything went well. Here is the whole story…….but to warn you……it’s not exciting.

Friday night after work, I had my husband pick up the baby and I went to Gymboree to cash in on the big sale they were having. I purchased a pair of pink pants to go with a top that Grandma had bought and I also spotted a dress on clearance that I loved. I found leggings to go with it and got matching socks for only 75 cents. The whole outfit on sale was well worth it. She looked adorable in it. AND, it was so nice to shop without a toddler constantly distracting me and complaining. Thank You Daddy!

When I arrived home, I tried the pink pants on the kid and they looked terrible. Big bottomed girls should not wear tight pink pants…..duh! So, I vowed to return or hopefully exchange them first thing in the morning.

Saturday morning, I got up, packed and prepared to head out of town. At 9 am on the dot, as planned, I headed to the mall to do my exchange. I took the baby with me to try on pants. I was not leaving until I found some I loved and we did try on quite a few pairs before buying these.

I then got gas and picked up the older kids at 10 am on the nose just as planned. They were perky and dressed nice and we had an easy drive to St. Louis. Once in town, we stopped at White Castles for lunch because I just had to have some…. besides, Beanie loves French fries.

After lunch, we cleaned up and drove to my father’s house. We arrived right at 1 as planned. At this point I am feeling like the luckiest mom on the planet. I mean, 3 kids in tow and all is going smoothly!

My father and his wife were nice to us and we sat and chatted and we all took turns keeping the toddler under control. It was a bit scary since they have expensive figurines everywhere and art on the floor. Even the pillows look expensive but I let Beanie throw them on the floor anyway. At some point all the kids asked for snacks and drinks and I cringed. Mona (the wife) got up and helped them in the kitchen. I think they were fairly polite and not too piggy.

We left at 3 as planned. That was just long enough. The toddler would have come completely unglued if we had stayed any longer. We all hugged and waved goodbye and I left feeling pretty good.

Saturday evening, we hung out at my mom’s house and she took the older kids to Kohl’s and got them a few articles of clothing which was nice of her. They are always in need of school clothes.

Sunday morning, I ran a few errands then we had a big breakfast at my moms and as soon as Beanie showed signs of needing a nap, we all loaded back up and headed for home. The baby fell asleep right off as planned and then I let Monster drive as soon as we were out of the thick of city traffic. I relaxed and even dozed a few minutes on the drive home. In no time we were there and I was feeling rested and ready to enjoy the balance of my weekend.

Tiger......I am SO dissapointed.

If ever there was a celebrity that I respected and admired, it was Tiger Woods. If ever there was a man who was rich and famous that I thought would respect his wife and family it was Tiger Woods. I am truly saddened and disappointed to find out that he is just as selfish and lowly as any other man.

I have no heroes!

The Reunion is Scheduled

On Sunday, my sister borrowed my phone to call our father and make arrangements to go visit him later in the week. She talked to him for a few minutes and then says “Hey Pop, Judi wants to say hi” and handed me the phone. I am thinking “oh shit, what will I say?”

The night before, Linda and I had stayed up talking until 3 am. She explained how Pop and Mona had Mona’s kids and Grand kids over all the time and how she thought that Mona had been systematically keeping us away in the hopes of having my father all to herself. For the most part, my father’s wife has never been particularly nasty to me and I have nothing against the women. On the other hand, the scenario is certainly possible and my poor father could just be getting bullied by his wife.

Wait a minute! My father the victim? Not likely! I really find it hard to believe that he would purposefully be indifferent to us in order to keep her happy unless it was what he wanted. I guess what I am saying is, one thing I am pretty sure about is that my father does what he wants and does not let other people run his life.

Then again, people change and relationships are tricky. In the final analysis, he seemed so genuinely happy to talk to me on the phone that day and he asked me to come visit………so………I am going.

This weekend on Saturday from 1-3 pm I am going to go visit my father for the first time in almost 10 years. I have invited my two older kids to go along and they both want to. The Bean is going for sure since she goes where I go. I am not real excited to show up with 3 kids at his door step. I am pretty sure that my father and his wife won’t be either. However, I can’t tell them they are not invited to go see their grandfather when it will probably be the last time they ever see him alive.

He had a heart attach a few years back and has never been the same ever since. He is just getting really old and is not in good health so it won’t be long until we have to gather to bury his body. I won’t have to sort his belongings as his wife will keep them and there will be no keepsakes for me I am sure. The only things I have that my father ever gave me, if you can even call it that, are an old wooden, homemade shoe rack from when I was a kid and some wine glasses and a big bowl that I fished out of a pile of junk that was headed to the Salvation Army one time when I was at their house. That’s it!

All about Pop

My father was born on February 3rd, 1925 to a couple of poor, alcoholics living in a coldwater flat in downtown St. Louis. He was the oldest of 4 children (2 boys and 2 girls). There are stories, not sure if they are true, that they would steel food so they did not go hungry. When he was 11 years old, his father died, presumably due to alcoholism. As a teen ager, he was drafted into WWII, and before he left he made sure to marry his sweet heart and knock her up. Later, the baby was still born.

While my father was off in France fighting the war, he met and had an affair with a women named Simone. Her husband was in jail at the time. After Pop returned to the states, he found out that Simone was pregnant with his child. So both Pop and Simone got divorced and Simone and my older brother Chuck, who was born(in 1946)by then, moved to the United States. My father married Semone and adopted Chuck and two years later they had my older sister Linda (born in 1948).

My father went to college on the GI bill and received a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He got a job at McDonald Douglas Corp. designing fighter jets for government contracts. He also got a pilot’s license, which was a lifelong dream of his. As a child, we always flew our little 4 seater airplane to Grandma and Grandpa’s house! My father and Simone also purchased a lovely 4 bedroom ranch home in the best school district. They were living the American dream!!

Then, my father craving a more intellectual partner met my mother at work and started an affair with her. He later divorced Simone and married my mother on August 1st, 1964. My mother did not have children and was over 30 so she set about starting a family right away. I was born on August 29th the following year. My brother Chuck was in Vietnam fighting the war, so they moved his stuff out and made his room the nursery. Some years later he confided that he didn’t like me much back then, taking his room and all. When I was about 3 ½ years old, my little brother, Bill, was born. I actually remember the day he came home from the hospital and I remember feeling jealous!

Pop wore a suit and carried a brief case and we thought he was very successful. Later, as an adult, I learned that my father was a smart guy, but my mother is a REALY intelligent person. She is freaky smart. She has an Electrical Engineering degree and graduated with honors in only 3 years!! She told me that classes were free after 21 credit hours…..so she loaded up.

As a child, I worshipped my father, but I guess all little girls do. My father was not one to play with us or lavish us with love and attention. Mostly, we were trained to be good and not bother him. If we were lucky, we could watch him do a household project or sit by him and watch “All in The Family”, which was one of his favorite shows. I remember we were not allowed to talk during the news, so we would wait for the commercial and then yammer away.

He did teach me to ride a bicycle…..sort of. He took the training wheels off and gave me a push and I just did it; started riding. I can’t recall what I was thinking at the time, but I would not be surprised if it was “better get this right or I might be in trouble!” He certainly ruled by fear.

We had a modern kitchen table with swivel chairs. The chairs had metal leg with four “feet” that stuck out. If you got in trouble at the kitchen table, he would smack you so hard you might fall off the chair and land on the metal feet, which was very painful. This must have happened to me many times because I remember it so well. My brother Chuck told me that he too remembered being smacked off those yellow swivel chairs by Pop.

Mostly, I remember the feeling that everyone was always on their best behavior so as not to piss him off. I refer to it as “walking on egg shells”. I am sure my mother warned us over and over again not to do this or that because it would make him angry and no one wanted him angry!

Then one Saturday, it was about 1975, my father got up, rented a small U-Haul and loaded up a few choice belongings and left. I did not understand what was really happening. They told me he was leaving, but I think I assumed he would be back. It took awhile for the reality to set in. My little brother doesn’t remember this day, but I do.

After that, my father would pick us up on Tuesday at 5 pm and take us to McDonald’s (probably our choice) and buy us dinner. He did not eat. We would sit and chat and then at 6 pm he would return us to our mom’s house. We never went to his house except Christmas and Fathers Day and we NEVER spent the night, not once. He mailed my mother the child support checks like clockwork and paid for part of my brother college, per the divorce decree, but usually if you asked him for help or money, he would turn you down.

One day he showed up on Tuesday wearing a wedding ring and I asked and he told me that he had gotten married. I recall feeling slighted that he did not tell us about it before it happened and then, he did not mention it until I actually asked. We were just not part of his life anymore and that hurt.

Many years later, I knew the whole story. He had met a woman at work. I think she was an executive secretary. She was not young or beautiful, but I guess he thought she was classy, that she was a step up from my mother. At the time he moved out of our house, she also left her husband and they moved into an apartment together. They are still married to this day!

When I was 30, I moved a few hours away from where my father was living and when I was in town I would call and ask if I could stop by. More than once, he told me that he was busy with the shopping or trimming his hedges or whatever, so, “no” we could not stop by.

When he and Mona got older, they decided to stop the Christmas and Fathers day get together because they were too much work. All four of his kids offered to help so it would be less work for them, but they were not interested in making it happen.

The last time I was there (probably in 2001), I really felt as though they did not want me around. And it really hurt my feelings. I cried all the way home. So I decided I would never put forth an effort to see him or call him again. I decided that it was always disappointing and painful so why bother. I was open to him making an effort to be a part of my life, but I knew that was not going to happen. He NEVER called me, not once to talk or ask to visit.

So, years went by and he never contacted me and I did not contact him. At some point, my sister asked me why I hated Pop. I told her I love him and asked why she thought I did not. She said “you never call him or visit”. I said “he never calls me either!”

My Family is "Complicated"!

So my sister from California showed up out of the blue this weekend. We sat up until 3 am talking. She sort of tricked me into talking to my dad on the phone. Now I am thinking I may go visit him. This is turning into a BIG deal. I am too busy to do a full blown write up……but I will keep you posted.

From left to right, my sister's boyfreind, my older 1/2 sister (same father), Bean and me.

Also.....I must add.......My husband still loves me even after meeting my sister......I am totally impressed.
He must REALLY love me!

why can't they just go away?

So just now, I flipped over to Facebook because someone left me a comment. I checked the live feed and my friend Nichole had commented”10 hour car rides are not my friend”. My first thought was they were going to Michigan for Thanksgiving with her husband’s Dad. Her husband is an old friend of mine; we used to work together about 10 years ago. (I was even his boss for a while.) He is a mutual friend of me and the X-boyfriend. I commented “where you going?” and then, it hit me, it is 10 hours to Denver. I bet you anything they are headed to Denver to stay with my X-boyfriend and his new wife for the week. They will go skiing or boarding and have an absolutely GREAT time. The x-boyfriend will show them all the fun stuff and they will be talking about this trip for months to come. He is a lot of fun….especially in Colorado. I was so regretting my question. I really don’t want to know.

A few months ago, I ran into another old friend, Craig, in the grocery store. We said hi and chatted. He told me he and his wife were headed to visit my x-boyfriend and wife next week and they were really looking forward to the trip. At the time, I sure didn’t want to hear about it. Not sure, but if I remember correctly, this was before me and Hubby were engaged. I know these people don’t realize how much I am still hurt by it all and I know that I would never tell them or they will just think I am mental……..which I am.

But, I really do get tired of tripping over the X-boyfriend and his wife. We have mutual friends on Facebook and her name pops up and my stomach sinks. I found her blog not too long ago and then was faced with blow by blow accounts of their lives since they moved to Colorado when she started the dumb thing. I don’t read it any more. I can’t. It is too depressing to me. She strikes me as a very immature and self centered person which makes me think less of her which makes it harder to deal with him choosing her over me. I know for a fact, that he chose her for two reasons. One, she is younger and two and probably more important, less kids. She had one and I had three. And he told me at least once……..you don’t need more kids. I know he wants to have kids someday and this young women with only one child is a better choice.

I hate it. I hate that they are not just gone from my sight; my life. I hate that they have a fun and exciting action packed life like I used to. I hate that I always feel like she stole my life.

And yes, if I could, I would trade her. I know that sounds nuts and I know it is impossible, but if I could I would rather be with the X-boyfriend, not where I am now. I would rather be in Colorado not Missouri. Where I am now is better than nothing, but it is not ideal. It is not my first choice. It was just the only thing that came along that was bearable; that I could live with. I so hated being alone you know. I am not good at alone.

I was so much happier back when I was with the X-boyfriend. He was my best friend. We hung out together and talked and were, well, a couple…….a close couple. Husband is a man. He says that girlfriends are who I should talk to. He likes his “me” time. He prefers to be alone more than with me. I know this is just who he is. He will never be close to me like the X was.

I am done whining since there is nothing I can do about it I need to just let it go. I need to count my blessing instead of inventorying my losses. I am glad that my daughter is healthy and she is a joy. I am glad that my husband married me so I don’t feel so used any more. I hope someday, I will truly be happy again……like I once was.

Petty Comments / bad movie

Call me no fun if you must…….but I just hate Brangelina!

Over the weekend, I tried to watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith AGAIN. It was on network TV last weekend and I found it near the end. I watched it for a while and found it unbearable. It was so contrived and so ridiculous. I hate the all action movie where the “hero” shoots everything with ease and the other guys can’t touch him. 20 bad guys shoot at once and not a one can hit the hero. I turned it off before the end…..I had to stop my suffering.

Well, this weekend, I was killing time while the baby napped and it was on TV again. (Network TV is in big trouble obviously.) This time I stumbled upon it near the beginning. Since we do not have cable or dish TV, there are not a lot of options so I decided to give it another shot. Because let’s face it, anything is better than major league football! Maybe, if I saw this award winning movie from the beginning I would not be so judgmental; maybe it would actually make sense. Well, I was wrong. It still stunk........it stunk even worse.

Now I was not only offended by the action, but the romance as well. This married couple was absurd and I hate what they represent. Of course your first instinct is to just off your spouse if they are in the way…..obvious choice…..no brainer!

AND, on top of all that, I know that in real life these two are a couple. I know that Brad Pitt fucked his wife, Jennifer Aniston, over so he could be with Angelina and this is the movie that started it all.

And people worship these two like they are Gods? They have no shame.

I know I am just being a negative old hag, but I hate these two and all they stand for. Really, they collect kids like Paris Hilton collects hand held puppies. I just find the whole thing appalling.......and what’s up with his goatee?...........and her stupid random tattoos?

Are you here.....Really here?

One of the books I am reading is all about “being in the present”. The idea here is that the past is gone and the future is not here yet so the only thing that is real is the present. If you are spending your time thinking about the past or plotting your future, you are wasting your present. Also, you can’t change the past and you really don’t know what the future holds so you really are wasting your time and energy if you spend much time on either. You should be focused on the here and now and live in the moment to fully appreciate it and get the most out of life.

Sounds good to me....I’m buying it.

I always think of eating and how I sit and read while eating and “poof”, before you know it, I am all done eating and didn’t taste a thing; didn’t pay any attention at all. So then, I will decide to eat and actually pay attention. No reading, no TV, no looking out the window or day dreaming. I look at each bite and think about my food, how it taste and how it smells and how much I am enjoying it or not enjoying it. It is actually really hard to do, but it is certainly the way to fully experience your meal and get the most out of it. It is also a good way to reduce calories consumed assuming you will eat less if you are actually paying attention to what you eat.

Now, I am somewhat dyslexic and I also have ADD, so all this focusing on one thing at a time is really hard for me. I am normally the type of person who is doing 3 things at once and still thinking about a few more things on top of that. I know this makes me seem a bit scatter brained at times and I know it is not the optimal situation, yet this is how I seem to operate. Spreading myself too thin over a larger than necessary area. It’s just who I am and I am always fighting it.

Cycling has always been therapeutic for me because it helps me to slow down and think of one thing at a time. It forces me to be more focused.

For a while I was on Adderal for ADD and it was amazing to actually focus on one thing at a time and have the things all around me disappear. I remember not too long after I started taking the meds that I realized I had no idea whose car was in the parking lot at work. My office had a window that overlooked the parking lot and I was in the habit of unconsciously seeing who came and went all day. At any point, I could pretty much tell you who was in the office and who was not. This was handy to the receptionist in the office next to mine because I would also listen to all her conversation and when she received a call for Tom and I heard her say, “let me see if Tom is in” and I knew he wasn’t I would bark out to her “Tom left about an hour ago”. She would say “thanks” and let her called know. All the while, I was actually getting a lot of work done as well!

I have since had to give up the Adderal because it was causing as many problems as it was solving. But, it was a great chance to experience the world more like “normal” people do.

The day of my wedding, I went to get my hair styled and on the way back a strange thing happened. I was driving towards my house when I noticed I felt different. At the time I could not label it anything but maybe wedding day craziness. But, now that I have been listening to this book I can honestly say I was totally in the present and it was great. I remember that I was so happy to see my family and so excited for the day’s events my mind was just stuffed full of the excitement of it all. There was no over thinking, no day dreaming; I couldn’t remember anything that was on my to-do list and I couldn’t even think of tomorrow or yesterday or even 10 minutes ago. It was so liberating in a way. I was totally consumed with my love for my family and my friends and the joy of the day. I did have a hard time getting ready for the wedding because I was just engrossed with whatever popped up in front of me. It was like my brain was perfect for that day and all that really matters in life was all that I could focus on. I know that all wedding days are glorious and happy (or at least they should be) so this is no big revelation. The point is that maybe, it is that glorious and happy because on that day, there is no yesterday and there is no tomorrow, there is only the present and it is so big and wonderful that it consumes us totally and we experience life to the fullest.

And wouldn’t it be nice to be able to do that every day!!?!?!?!

The more I try to rid myself of a thought....the more I am stuck with it.

A few years back, I was examining my life and it occurred to me that I have pretty much been mad at the world for years……..for most of my life. I am sure that it all started when my father dumped us and my sister dumped us and my mother mentally checked out (if she was ever there). I was abandoned and I resented not having a family to take care of me and all the stuff “normal” kids had. That anger continued to grow as I got older and added to the list of things I thought were unfair that happened to me.

The one important thing I determined at the time I figured this all out was that I had never actually been aware of that underlying anger. I did not realize it was there. For years and years, it was there, but I did not recognize it. I thought I was a pretty happy person. I thought all the “challenges” I had faced in my life gave me strength and dimension. I tried to put a positive spin on it all, or at least only felt sorry for myself, but I never thought for a minute of myself as ANGRY. Now at age 38 I was discovering that under the facade I had built, I was really an angry person. It was the first step in figuring out what to do about it. Know thyself!! It is a great piece of advice.

Over the next few years, I read books, saw a therapist, talked to friends, tried to meditate and did anything and everything I could think of to deal with my anger and other mental issues. I learned a lot and things did get somewhat better. Maybe time just made things better……but they did improve.

Now, I will be the first to tell you that you are not alone when bad things happen. Bad things happen to everyone. We all know that. I certainly don’t want anyone to throw me a pitty party. I also know that it is stupid to dwell on the past, I know that this anger I have inside me is of no use to me. I know that I would be better off without it. I know that holding resentment from the past negatively impacts the present and that is NOT what I want to do at all.

Here is the catch though……….knowing I don’t want it and getting rid of it are two VERY different things. It is so easy for someone to tell you “get rid of that old baggage, it is doing you no good at all”. It is a completely different thing to actually be able to get it out of your mind, your heart, your life, especially when it has been a constant companion since you were in the 4th grade or there abouts.

For some reason, I woke up this morning particularly angry. It always seems to really sink in during the night. I lay awake in bed and think too much and I just get mad as hell. Then I say to myself……”self, think about something else. Think about something nice and happy.” And some days, it works and others I can’t seem to get my focus off of the injustices that are chapping my ass or the depressing shit that is just making me blue.

This morning I was thinking about how when people tell me they have a great dad, a loving father that has always been good to them, my true feeling; my actual thought is, incomprehension. I actually, have no idea what it means, what it is like. It is a concept that is so far out of my realm of comprehension that it just means nothing. Like Charlie Brown’s teacher is talking…….it’s nothing. How sad it that!! How ridiculous is it that my brain can’t even get around the idea that someone would have a real father. It is like my mind says “impossible” and just kicks it back out. In general, most of my friends don’t have fathers. I often wonder if somehow that is a common bond that we are not aware of……. some sort of 6th sense.
After I spent some time dwelling on my poor upbringing, then I moved on to spend some time thinking how shitty it is that I can’t trust my husband and how ridiculous it is that I even bother to talk to the ex-boyfriend at all. And, still care what the hell he says.

I guess I just want total control of my mind and I know that is not possible. Then I try to learn ways of getting rid of all these negative feeling and thoughts and the more I learn about it, the more I realize that the more I think about it the more I just defeat the whole idea of getting rid of it.

It is a big freakin’ circle that I can’t free myself from! No wonder I get depressed……..

Thinking about Alcoholism

So I think my father is an alcoholic. Or at least he was last time I saw him. I say he was an alcoholic because his drinking defiantly, negatively affected his family. He would drink too much and then act abusive….or irresponsible…well, just plain stupid.
I remember, when I was a child, going to the 905 liquor store with my mom and getting cases of wine. Yes, he bought his wine by the truck load. I remember when he ran the car into the garage while trying to pull the car in and he was so drunk he missed. I remember that he may not drink daily, but when he did he drank A LOT. I mean 2 or three bottles of wine..maybe more. Then once he was drunk he would start fights….or drama. He never thought he was an alcoholic. I don’t think he realized how much he hurt those around him. On the other hand, maybe he was just an asshole and the booze had nothing to do with it. Maybe he would have broken Chucks (my older ½ brother) arm anyway. He did once almost beat me to death, while sober, for saying “no” to him. I don’t remember why I said it, but I know he chased me to the other end of the house and whooped the crap out of me for talking back to him.

I also think Friss’s biological father (his name is Scott) is / was an alcoholic. He was not like my father in that he was not a part time heavy drinker. Instead, he came home EVERY day with a 12 pack of canned beer. I think it was BUSCH. He would always drink 2 or 3 on the drive home and then slide the box in the bottom of the refrigerator when he arrived home. (I remember after he left thinking “why do I have this big empty spot on my fridge shelf???? Oh yea……no more beer!”) He then drank the rest that evening. Yes, he was drinking a 12 pack a day. He was never rowdy or stupid…..just buzzed all the time. I remember thinking that I never saw him sober……ever……he was always buzzed. I, by the way, never drank his beer. I didn’t like it. In fact, I didn’t drink much at all back then, maybe some wine on the weekend, but never touched that old yucky box of beer on the bottom shelf……….never! I think I started drinking beer back in 2002 when a friend turned me on to Amber Bach. I remember thinking “this stuff aint’ bad”.

I know Miss Dennison was a drunk. When I was a kid, one of my best friend’s moms would sit at her kitchen table and drink vodka by herself. Eventually, she would pass out on the table. She did this every night. We were teenagers back then and more than happy to have her pass out so we were unsupervised. Her loyal Cocker Spaniel dog Mead would sit under her chair and guard her if we got too close. I remember thinking how pathetic she was. I am pretty sure she was battling depression and mental illness and as teenagers, we were not very sympathetic.

I am not concerned about my own drinking habits at this point. Yes, I know that my Halloween drinking was stupid, but that is a very rare occasion. The last time I drank that much was around 9 years ago. So, I am not real worried that I will do it again anytime soon. I have however, pretty much vowed to avoid hard liquor going forward. It’s really not of interest to me so to simplify things I am just banning it. French fries are another thing I have banned. They are evil and fattening and it is easier just to say NEVER.

My husband has been complaining lately that we are alcoholics and need to quit drinking all together. I on the other hand do not feel that way. We are nothing like the three examples from my past I wrote about above. We do sometime split a 6 pack on a week night. We've been known to split a 6 pack more than once a week sometimes. Is that really such a crime? I think that having 3 beers, at home in the evening, between 6 and 9 pm is not out of control or excessive. May not be the healthiest thing in the world, but does not make us alcoholics. I get up the next morning and do my 6 mile run with no problem.

On the weekends, we may drink a bit more…….share some wine…….or have, heaven forbid, two six packs in one day. I like to have beer in the afternoon and do yard work and then drink some beer and barbeque dinner. I don’t get falling down drunk, I don’t pass out, I just enjoy my little buzz. Is that so wrong? Actually, after a beer or two, my husband is more friendly and talkative which is another reason I like a few beers on the weekend.

If I thought it was out of control or dangerous…….I would stop. If I was driving drunk…..I would stop. If I was getting abusive, I would stop. If I was passing out, I would stop. If I was getting fat, I would ban it! But mostly it is just fun and relaxing.

He told me he worries that he could not stop if he wanted to. I know I could stop if I wanted to. I don’t feel that it has any hold on me. I think it is an unhealthy habit, one of many that I have, but I don’t think it is alcoholism……at least not for me. Maybe it is a bigger deal to him and I should be more sympathetic. I think he worries it has a hold on him.

Still Searching

Last week, I decided to get some books to read. I have not read anything lately, except for magazines thanks in part to having a small child and a full time job, but also because it seems like it is hard to settle in and read a book unless your life is in a relative state of calm. This calm is something I have hardly seen in some years, but now that it is here, I want to read more.

I thought for a while about what I would like to read if given the chance and decided that “self-help” books were probably in order. Part of me feels silly choosing a self help book. Like it is somehow not intellectual enough or makes me appear in need of help which is somehow unattractive. I suppose people have sneered at me more than once in the past for reading a little pop psychology. On the other hand, I keep thinking that now that I have clawed my way out of the depths of despair, I really want to look back, understand what happened and have a bit of game plan in case the evil powers of the universe should conspire against me in the future. I keep hoping I have paid my dues and they won’t, however, I also keep thinking that bad shit keeps cycling around and it will find its way back to me again at some point.

I decided to check out a few books from the library, but when I searched the card catalog all the books I was interested in were already checked out. I then looked into checking out an audio book. I am tech savvy and a bit ADHD and dyslexic, so I decided an audio book was the perfect solution. I have an MP3 player and can picture myself unloading the dishwasher while I listen to my latest book.

I down loaded one of the first books I came to that looked interesting figuring it was my destiny. It is a short book called 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace by Wayne Dyer. I listened to the whole thing over the weekend and it was chocked full of great advise. It did not, however, give much advice on how to accomplish all those secrets. I mean, telling someone that the past is irrelevant and they need to not let it influence the present is a sound idea, however, if you are at all like me, you can’t seem to flush the past from your mind and let go of your old baggage. I need advice on how to accomplish the 10 secrets now that I know what they are.

Actually, I knew most of them already, but, if you don’t beat me over the head repeatedly, ideas just don’t sink in and take hold. I have actually started to listen to the book for a second time already. My only complaint about the book is that I find all the references to God to be a bit distracting or confusing. I guess I don’t like the term God, because it has so many meanings attached to it and for every person those meaning are different. I believe in a higher power, or spirituality in the universe, but I don’t like to label it God.

Also, over the weekend, my husband and I went to see the new Cohen brother’s movie A Serious Man. This was a thought provoking, yet funny movie that was pretty much on target for what I am “studding” with my book and mind these days. The key phrase of the movie is “Receive with simplicity everything that happens to you.”

This is, when you boil it all down, the key to life.

One of the things I have struggled with in my life is the question of “why”?
Why me?
Why did this happen? What did I do to deserve this or that?
I suppose it is a question that all people struggle with, although some more than others, I suspect.

I have grown to understand that there really is no "why" or reason for why things happen. That life is basically random and good things happen to bad people, and good people and bad things happen to good people and bad people. This concept, however, has been a huge pill for me to swallow. I have tried to understand where I got the idea that there is order in the universe or a meaning to life. That things should be fair. The first thing that comes to mind is Woody Allen, but I can’t actually blame him, I think he is just struggling like I do. He is the proverbial boat with me. I keep thinking it was the Baptist Church my neighbors took me to as a child, or the Catholic background of my father and older sister. Don’t they all harp on reaping what you sow and good things come to those who wait and the meek shall inherit the earth, etc. etc. I always thought that bad things happened to people because they were doing something wrong and somehow deserved the consequences. When you take fair consequences out of life, it all seem so scary to me. So random, so unfair.

Tequila and Halloween are not a good mix

My Halloween was both terrible and great all at once.

Terrible: My Husband and I had Grandma come to town to watch Bean so we could venture out and do a grown up activity together. Actually, it was a group bicycle ride with drinking and costumes. Think float trip on wheels. I was sooo looking forward to having the fun filled day with my friends, my bicycle and my husband. The weather was sunny and my expectations were high. Things got off to a pretty good start and we were having a lot of fun and seeing tons of people we never usually get to see because we are stuck at home with a toddler. Then, my new friend Meredith offered me a shot of tequila. I was in party mode and happily slugged some tequila from a water bottle and then chased it with a bottled margarita mix. It was really tasty. The party mood and freedom of it all got the best of me and I did more shots of tequila than I should have. To keep the story simple, let’s just say I spent the better part of the day sick from drinking too much and NOT having any fun at all. I was so disappointed in myself………I could not believe I had ruined this day by drinking too much. I am no kid and I know how much to drink and not drink and what happens if you screw it up. I don’t know what came over me that made me go nuts and forget that booze is not cool-aid and it will kick your ass. I really think the joy of freedom, of feeling like a childless person got the best of me. I think the real story here is that I need to have a social life…..I need to do fun things with my husband more often, get a babysitter. I felt terrible all weekend; both physically and mentally.

Great: So how did this bad day have something good too you ask? Well, the good came in the fact that my sweet husband took care of me all day. I really felt like he and I were together; like we were a married couple that belonged together. If you are at all familiar with our background, you understand how huge that is for me. There have been many, many times in our past that we went somewhere together and he pretty much acted like he barely knew me. But this weekend, he was super sweet, loving and by my side. He never got mad at me for getting shit faced on our beautiful day out. In fact, he was very sweet and understanding about the whole thing. (He did his fare share of drinking too much and acting stupid which may explain his extreme understanding.)

So, the good that came from it is the fact that I feel closer than ever to my husband. That I feel our love is getting stronger all the time. We have vowed to do more social activities together and be more outgoing on a regular basis. This is something we really need to do and the fact that we both agree about it is great. My husband can be an antisocial jerk at times, so the fact that this all went down and he seems to have found the positive in it makes me happy as can be.

Side note: The other cool thing that thrilled me was when a girl at the party noticed my ring and gushed over it. Now I shopped long and hard for a ring that I thought was really cool and unique and have had very little feedback from the general public. All I get is the obligatory “oh what a lovely ring” said with little interest. So to have someone who genuinely seemed to dig my ring was a thrill for me.

Still sad that I didn’t get to enjoy more of my day out :(

Oops....did not mean to leave him out

I felt bad because Monster has not had his photo in the blog. So here is a picture of my 16 year old boy.
(He likes to make odd faces at the camera.)
I am soooooo very lucky to have such a great kid.
All my kids are great!! They are what truly makes me happy in life.

I Hate Day Care and my Job

On Wednesday 10-14-09 Bean started full time day care. The first day, she marched in there and loved it; all the toys and things to do. She waved bye-bye and seemed fine. By mid afternoon, my mommy senses felt a strong pull. I knew she was really worried we were not coming back. When I went to pick her up at 4 p.m. she kept hugging me over and over again. You could see the relief in her eyes. She was so happy to see me and I was equally thrilled to see her.

For the next week she was in a huge funk. She was crabby and disagreeable all the time. She cried when dropped off at school and cried during the day at school too. She was clingy and needy at home and extra temperamental. She was fighting getting dressed, fighting diaper changes, and everything made her upset. This all upset me of course which added to the stress of it all. She also came down with a cold which I’m sure aggravated the situation, but overall, she has not been happy about the change to day care.

When you think about it, it makes total sense. She has always been with me or a close trusted person. She came to work with me for the last two years and on the days I could not keep her she stayed with Grandma or my good friend Elissa. Both are people she knows well and trusts. We all gave her a lot of one on one attention and the security of knowing that we were there for her. At day care, there are many kids and many people and no ONE person is in charge of her. What a total change for her. No wonder she feels scared and insecure.

She seems better now that it has been a while longer. I have been taking her with me to work on Wednesdays so she only has day care two days in a row at a time. The school started letting her keep her blanket with her all day which has also helped. But now she is ridiculous about having her blanket with her even at home; it MUST be with her 100% of the time or she goes nuts. She still cries like crazy when you drop her off in the morning and they tell me she still cries during the day when they are in transition. When she is busy, she is fine, but when there is down time, she thinks too much and gets upset and starts missing her loved ones. (She may take after me!) Other than the blanket, she has been in a good mood at home which is a big relief.

On top of the stress created by the fact that I feel like I am torturing my sweet little innocent girl by packing her off to spend the day with a bunch of stranger, I am also dealing with my own issues associated with my job and not having Bean at work with me has only brought those issues to the front. I have been unhappy with my job for a few years now, but being able to take her along made it well worth staying. Now that she is not there, the “ridiculousness” of my job seems so much more glaring.

I miss her too. I miss feeling like I had my fill of her during the day and was relieved that Daddy played with her all evening. I miss being here for her ALL THE TIME. I feel really empty without her. She filled a lot of my intimacy needs.

I could still bring her to work if I wanted to but she was starting to get very bored in my office. It really is not the best place for a 2 year old to spend all day. Ideally, I wish I could be with her and have her in a more stimulating environment. I really don’t want to work…….not career minded at this point. I wish I could dream up a way to make money and be with Bean and have Bean be happy. I guess that is every parents dream.

You know the more I try and blog stuff about my life the more I realize how it is all interrelated and it is hard to understand all the details of this without the background or details of that. Life is complicated.

Keeping it Real.......but not too real!!

So this morning, while I was jogging with one of my running partners, I suddenly just started telling her everything. I told her about Friss and the baby……..I told her about how my husband was such a jerk for so long it is a wonder I hung in there. How he saw the other women when I was pregnant and I caught them together. As I was telling her all this stuff, it felt sort of good, like I was being real. Like normally, I hold back and put forth an effort to appear to have a more perfect life than I do. I am sure most people do this as well. But once in a while, it is nice to just tell it like it is. It is nice to not hold back or walk carefully around the dark spots in your past. I have known Julie, my running buddy, for a long time now and there is something about a running partner that builds trust. At the time I was talking I felt that trust. Besides, she is a great person and I really like her and she has not had the picture perfect life. She should not be too judgmental.

The minute the run was over and I got back to my car and she left in her car I felt terrible. I felt I had made a huge error. I felt I had been way too open. I felt so exposed. Now I am just worried about the whole thing and thinking it was a bad idea.

I guess there is some sort of fine line between being open and honest and real with your friends and just being a crazy person with a fucked up life. I don’t want people to think I am just a total head case and steer clear of me in case I will suck them into my vortex of lunacy.
Actually, I think I am pretty sane at this point. I have my head on pretty good. I have made some poor decisions in my life and I have had some bad luck, but overall, I think I am a fairly likable and decent and good person. God I hope so anyway.

I read a lot of blogs on line and different people share a lot of different things. I think when they are open and honest about their ghosts and demons it makes them more human and thus easier to identify with. I have been reading this one girls blog, she lives in Australia which is just super cool anyway, but I feel like I sort of know her……..like we are friends. I truly care about her and her family and her life. It is funny the way just knowing about someone can make you care. I have never met her personally and probably never will (Australia) but I feel like my life is richer for having found her blog and her blog friendship.

Anyhow……the gist of this post is this; I sure hope I did not freak out my running partner this morning and I sure hope I can find a balance between being myself, open and honest and not being a scary crazy person.

Father responds to Letter

So my father and his wife sent me a note back. It was on note card that they obviously had around the house. They are old so I should not be upset if they don't make any big effort to get a proper wedding type card. Hell, they may not be able to walk around Walgreen's unassisted for all I know.

The note said congratulations; said the kids and husband are cute and handsome; thanks for the note and that was about it.

No gift. No comment like "you should come visit sometime" or "give us a call once in a while".

As usual........blah.......
I will now forget all about them until the next major milestone in my life!

Friendship

In the past few weeks, I have had two people I would have called “good friends” decide they no longer want to talk to me. This has made me sad mostly, but a little angry too. I have spent way too much time fretting about it.

I have been “unfriended”! (One of them literally unfriended me in Facebook.)
One pretty much told me that they no longer wanted to speak to me and the other just quietly went away. Not something I would want to do to any of my friends.

I personally, just don’t understand what good it does to “unfriend” someone. Don’t we all need as many friends as we can get? Isn’t being a friend a good and admirable thing? I was a good friend to them. It is not like I was doing anything wrong to these people. I have wracked my brains out trying to come up with a good reason why these people should not want to be my friend any longer and can’t come up with anything. I have been here as best I can for them if they needed me. I have been an ear, a shoulder, supportive, etc., and all those good friend things.

After much thought and contemplation on the situation I think I finally figured it out. These people were not really my friends in the first place.……they were acting like a friend for the wrong reasons and now those reasons have been removed, so they have no need for me anymore.

One of them was a man and, as we all know, men pretend to be your friend in hopes that they will someday, somehow, be MORE than friends. They hang around day after day and tell their precious dick to be patient “I’m working on it big guy…….any day now we will get her in bed.” Some hang around longer than others, but most, if they don’t have some success getting sex, eventually move on because they can’t seem to just be friends with a women. Their valuable resources are being wasted on unfruitful activities.

I guess getting married finally drove this guy off. It makes me sad, I will miss him.
It is not like a big change that I got married. I have been with BabyDaddy for almost 4 years now. I have been with him through my whole friendship with this guy.

I refuse to feel bad about losing these “friends” for one more minute. I have done my best to be their friends and now they have decided to end it. It is out of my control.

Well, so be it, I will except these “ends” and realized that it is for the best because they were not REAL friends anyway.

Remember……TRUE FRIENDS are very rare and should be highly valued. Most people we call friends are not really going to be there for us in the long run.

A letter to my Father

So today I wrote my father and letter and told him I got married. I guess I feel he has the right to know my name changed.

I composed it all nice and friendly like and enclosed photos of all the kids. Just because he is a jerk does not mean that I should not try to be a good daughter as best I can at this point.

What I really wanted to say was, “Why don’t you care if you are part of my life? Why do you alienate your family, your kids, the people you should hold close? Why are you so detached and self centered that I feel more comfortable not having to actually talk to you? You are a sad human being and I will never be like you. What’s worst of all, you are happy with your life and the choices you have made and would probably do it all over again if you could go back in time. I will never understand why you want it this way.”

Then again, I really don’t even care enough to complain. He means nothing to me at this point and I could really care less. I may be a bit frustrated that I feel the need to even tell him I got married.

OUR WEDDING DAY

The Newlyweds!

Ramone, me, husband, Bean and the preacher guy.

Feeling sassy!

We got married on a bluff in the Mark Twain National Forest. It is a scenic spot we used visit together back when we would venture out into the woods to bike and run before we had a baby. It was a simple ceremony and we each wrote our own vows. It was perfect really.......I couldn't have asked for anything more.
Except a honey moon.........sadly, we can't afford one right now.

2 Days to go and 2 Disasters

Can you believe it.......wedding is only 2 days away and I have a huge zit on my chin! It totall reminds me of Chris Griffin's talking zit.
I hope it doesn't make a comment during the ceremony!!

Also, it is raining and has been for over 12 hours. There is flooding. The forecast for Saturday is great, but the trails will be muddy as hell. Oh well, a little mud on the shoes isn't that bad.

But this ZIT!!
Just shoot me now before I see the photos!!

My life's Journey - part I

I am still amazed at what has happened to me…..where I went and how I got back. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that life would be like this; that it even could be like this. I spent a few years so very depressed. I spent many days during that time contemplating suicide; wondering if I could do it, how I would do it, how nice it would be to get out of my life, out of this world. In the end I decided I could not do it because it would ruin my kids’ lives and I didn’t want to harm them. Then, I spent a lot of time avoiding the easy way out…..for my kids. Later, I fired the psychiatrist and the therapist and flushed all the meds and things started to improve. I found it easy to quit smoking once I quit taking all the prescription medication my doctor had prescribed. I finally started on the road to recovery, once I got rid of all the professionals who I had gone to seeking help. I now know; they only made it worse, not better. But, hind sight is 20/20. So, my actual recovery, which I consider starting in spring of 2005 when I fired the professionals, has taken years. It is now, fall of 2009 and I finally, for the most part, feel like a whole, sane, normal, person again. A person much like the person I was before all this happened. However, I will never be the same. I have lost a lot of faith. And, I will never know exactly which things did the most harm or what factors caused the most damage. Was it the betrayal, the loss, the medications, or the fear? I am almost 10 years older and that changes a person too.

Here is my story…..well part of it, in a rather condensed format.

I was living with my x-boyfriend. A man I dearly loved and wanted to spend the rest of my life with. The person that just felt “right”. After 3 years of dating and one magical year of living together he started to act different and I had no idea why. I spent the next two years in a constant state of anxiety trying to figure out what had happened to our perfect love. Later I discovered he was seeing a girl that worked for him, a very beautiful, younger woman. She got divorced and they are now married! The last two years of our relationship were emotionally devastating for me since he would not explain to me what was happening. I just felt things slipping away…..farther and farther away and I seemed powerless to save it and it was tearing me up. It was a very confusing and hard time in my life. I thought to myself “I can’t live without him. He is my soul mate…he is part of me…I can’t lose him.” But I did. He moved out in the spring of 2002.

This breakup was right on the heels of another devastating event in my life. Days before Christmas in 2001 my oldest boy hit his 11 month old son and mortally wounded him. Friss was sent to prison for murder, sentenced to 20 years. The day I got the news that the baby was dead, I learned where the saying “bouncing off the walls” came from. It is the saddest event I have ever lived through.

The next big blow, the one that really sealed my fate, took place in the spring of 2003. In an effort to build a social life and meet new people, I had joined a rock climbing gym/club and on a climbing road trip I broke, well shattered, my heel. I had to have my heel reconstructed surgically. The doctors did a great job and I will always be grateful that I have no lingering issues from that injury. On the flip side, I was now spending the summer on crutches and the couch and I was already lonely and depressed. I am an active person and cycling is my favorite pass time…..it is my therapy and my social life. Being sentenced to sitting still was horrifying to me. This is when I got completely hopeless and asked the psychiatrist to help me. This started a two year, multiple doctors, and multiple medications fiasco that totally screwed my life up.

Oh, and add in there that the company I worked for was going bankrupt and making everyone that worked for them do 3 peoples jobs. I was working 13-15 hour days in an extremely negative and stressful environment. I was desperately looking for another job, but I live in a smaller town so finding a new job can be a time consuming trick.

From spring of 2003 until spring of 2005 I went to 2 different psychiatrists, 3 different therapists and tried countless prescription medications all in an effort to feel better. To feel less hopeless, less depressed, less lost, less like my life was now over but I was not allowed to die. I know they all meant well…..it is not their fault. I know they help some people. I found out the hard way that my depression was not a chemical imbalance in my brain and therefore medication did not help. In fact, many of the meds they gave me had negative effects on me such as weight gain, paranoia and depression. I switched doctors and therapist thinking that maybe I just needed another person. That the next one would have a better idea that would actually help. In the long run none of them helped…..at all.

Tired of it all, I fired the doctors and quit the meds in the spring of 2005. I think the real reason I did it was because I felt it was impeding my cycling ability. I decided that quitting all the meds was the only answer since I had tried to quit one or two at a time and failed. I found out that I was actually taking meds to counter act side effects of other meds. Not uncommon, but not good.
I started to feel better right away and things in my life started to get better as well. However, it is not all roses from here on out. No, you don’t climb up out of a deep depression that has lasted years over night. The only way to describe it is gradual. Over the next few years, things slowly, but surely got better and better. I had honestly thought that I might never feel whole again. When I was seeing the doctors and therapist I kept telling them “I have lost my inner peace and I can’t get it back!”

Last weekend, for the first time in almost 10 years…..I felt peace………I actually felt, deep down inside myself, a warm, peaceful, calmness. It was amazing. I never thought it would happen, but it did. It took year and years to get here, but I am back. Or at least a big part of me is back.

The Four letter word - F.E.A.R.

Here are some thoughts about fear from the book Positive Energy by Dr. Judith Orloff:

"Fear is the biggest energy thief there is. A master seducer, it shamelessly robs us of everything good and powerful, preys on our vulnerabilites. Many people become mesmerized for a lifetime, letting negative attitudes seize control. Enough! Though some fears are intuitively protective... we can't let the irrational ones bamboozle us. Fear never stands alone; it inflames every vampire emotion from worry to shame....

Most fears are self-induced. We don't mean to, but we inflict an emotional terrorism on ourselves when we let our dark side run amok. The self-sabatoging messages we send, including the 'I'm-not-good-enough' harrangue, distort reality. To ensure we're perceiving ourselves accurately, we must look through the lens of love....

7 Tactics for De-Engergizing Fear:
1. Name your Fears So They Can't Ambush You
2. Listen to Your Intuition
3. Say a Prayer to Lift Fear
4. Make a Gratitude List
5. Visit and Energetically Uplifting Place
6. Heal Energetic Scars
7. Avoid Absorbing Other People's Fears"

It's so important to try and live our lives on a daily basis from a place of love rather than fear. We especially need to be aware if we are making decisions from a place of fear, as our decisions are essentially creating the tapestry of our lives. If we want a life we love, we must choose to act from love. Get rid of that four letter word once and for all!

The List

So, as I contemplate my wedding vows……and actually marrying this person who has, in the past, done some pretty nasty, mean things to me. I find myself asking what is good and what is bad about our relationship.

What is good?:
1) I respect his intelligence level: A very important and insurmountable thing for me is being stupid. I have dated more than one guy who turned out to be just plain stupid. Nice does not make up for stupid. And, I really can’t love or live with a person who I think is stupid and I have this family that is fairly well educated so my “stupid” bar is pretty high.
2) Health conscious: This may actually go along with intelligence, but my fiancé knows how to take care of his health and does it for the most part (we are all human and eat junk food from time to time (or beer)). I totally appreciate the fact that he is not a couch potato and he is not going to pack on 10 pounds a year until he gets a bad back and high blood cholesterol. And, being in shape is pleasing to the eye as well………yea, he’s very hot naked!
3) Similar interest and hobbies: We both like to cycle and run and are active and outside people. It is important to me that we share these hobbies so we understand why each other wants to do these hobbies and we can do them together as well. You know the saying……“A family that plays together stays together.”
4) Fiscal responsibility: This may go with intelligence too…..but my fiancé and I both live within our means. We are not racking up debt in order to live some materialistic life style that the media has convinced us we need to have to be happy. We don’t have cable TV, we don’t have fancy new cars, we don’t collect things (well, except bikes). We both want to live a modest and simple life and save up for retirement or a rainy day.
5) We are both morning people. We are both organized and fairly neat. We like similar music. We both enjoy traveling. We are both hard working people. We are both educated and articulate.
6) He is willing to marry me even if it is not important to him. He says that we are already a family and he is committed to me and our child and he does not need a legal document from the government to validate it. However, in my mind, the flip side of this is that it sure makes it easy to change your mind later and say I was never committed or I would have married you. I guess it is a pro that he is willing to do it for me even if it is not important to him. And I don’t think he is the type to plan on a divorce someday…………his parents have been married for 50 years! I assume this is proof that he is actually committed.

What is bad?:
1) My fiancé can be very moody and depressive. Throughout our relationship he has had hours and days where he just shuts me out and won’t talk to me at all. It is very odd to me and I hate it. It hurts my feeling and I find it very difficult to deal with. Lately he has been much better and he says it is because he is so happy……..which is great. I just worry that someday it will come back and mental illness is a tough battle to fight.
2) There are huge trust issues. The first 8 months we were dating he was on again and off again and sending me a lot of mixed messages. On more than one occasion, when we were together, he even acted like we were not. This lack of respect is hard to put behind me. Later, when I got pregnant, he wanted out in the worst way…….pushing hard for abortion or adoption. Again, I felt he did not respect me at all. He did not even tell his parents about me and the baby until a month before she was born. I know, up to the day I delivered, he was hoping some miracle would still save him.
3) He said things I will never forget. Cruel and inappropriate things………things he can never take back. He once agreed that I was his “dirty little secret”. He once lamented that our fetus was probably healthy and would survive. He has told me before we would never get married……with the underlying message being “I would NEVER marry YOU!”
4) Then there is the other women……….yea, I found out, after I was pregnant that he was also seeing a women who was married and lived about 100 miles west from us. She was an old flame from high school that he had rekindled with. He once told me she was the love of his life and he could not live without her. She wanted to leave her husband for him and he said “No, we can’t do that to him”. They did however; sneak around behind his back plenty. (Not sure why that is better??) And they did behind my back too. When I was about 6 months pregnant I actually caught them in bed together!! Thankfully, I do not believe they have been together in the past year or two…….since the baby was born.
5) He is 10 years younger than I am. That puts a lot of pressure on me to stay young or feel young and I am afraid it will weigh him down more and more as time goes by. When he turns 40 I will be turning 50 and he will still be able to catch women of 30 or less. How will he handle that? How will I handle that? It is scary.
6) My fiancé likes to be purposefully non communicative. He likes to keep people guessing and not tell what is on his mind or how his day was or anything that is going on. All this secrecy plays into my trust issues and insecurities. I know it is not a healthy thing. I feel it is very close to lying and I think it sucks. He justifies it by saying he is a private person or he is an only child or that men are not big talkers.
7) I know he is capable of being heartless…..he has done it to me before. He can watch me hurt and just ignore it. This is hard for me. If I love someone I can’t turn my back on them when they are in pain.
8) He doesn’t really want to marry me………..BUT, why doesn’t he want to marry me. He was married before. He told me he believed in marriage back when we were dating. His latest idea that it is just a government; legal thing seems new and strange.

I guess I just hate the fact that I am not getting married to a person who wanted to marry me, who asked me to marry him and is actually excited about it. This is my perception of how it normally goes down. Instead, he invites no one to the wedding, tells no one we are getting married and is admittedly doing it only to appease me. Seems he wants it to be a secret that we are married.

On the other hand, I don’t want to be alone. I want to be married to him. We have child and if he says he is committed than why not make it legal. I will feel more secure if we are married. I will definitely feel better when hanging with his family or my friends if he is actually my husband and not “The Baby Daddy”…….which, I think just sounds humiliating and embarrassing.

To sum it all up:
If he has all the benefits of a marriage then by golly lets have all the trappings to go along with it.
No more eating your cake and having it too.

Wedding Update

Thought I should post a photo of my engagement ring.

Wedding is going down on October 10th. Yea....a bit quick. He wanted a small, simple ceremony and I decided having it outside in the fall would be beautiful. Admittedly, I wanted to get it down and not wait for something nuts to derail my life before the wedding. I hope that we don't have rain and the leaves change a bit. Right now they are still pretty green. I wanted them to be colorful.

I found a dress on line from JCPenney for only $99!
I made my own bouquet with 50% off flowers from Hobby Lobby.
The officiant who will marry us, found on line, cost only $75.
(I am bragging.......I think most people spend WAYYY too much money on their wedding.)

The only thing that was expensive was my ring (see above). Mostly because Hurst robbed us blind for the setting; really would not recommend them to a friend.

I have not made the final payment to the "preacher man"........just in case. Still keep fearing he will just come home one day and say "No! I am not going to do it".
Is that crazy?
I guess it is. Our whole relationship is a bit out there. It is really good in so many ways yet really complex and "sick" in other ways.
(I will work up a post soon to delve into these details.)

All I need to do now is write my vows!! Which is hard. Oh and buy some Champagne to do a toast with. Everything is coming together nicely and I think that is a good sign. Nothing major has materialized to make me seriously doubt whether we are doing the right thing. Although his ex-girlfriend did email me and piss me off real good the other day. I wish I could kick her into orbit!

Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

You know, sometimes I feel like I am doing my daughter a disservice by not telling her that it doesn’t matter how smart she is, or how hard she works, or how good of a person she is. That in the United States, in this day and age, what is most important in a women…….what most people value the most……..is looks, beauty, youth, and sex. I guess it has always been that way, but the 60s tried to change it and some people bought into the idea of changing it. But really, it never changed and if she wants to marry a successful, handsome man, she needs to work on being beautiful or popular, not smart.

I hate to tell her…….she is an honor student and a bit of a brainiac. I wish I would have known when I was young. I could have done more with myself…..more makeup, more hair, more clothing….more superficial improvements. I could have been a lot more “desirable” if I would have known what I was shooting for. Instead I took care of my health, got an education and a good job. I worked hard and kept a neat house….paid my bills, lived with in my means. All of these things DON’T MATTER. I could have married a rich man and hired a maid!!! I should have been pretty and popular!!

Road Rage

There are two kinds of people in this world:

1) They slow down as they come to an intersection, even if the light is green and there are no cars nearby, just in case the light may change to yellow or just in case something jumps out or changes. These are the overly cautious types…..or as I look at it paranoid. (these people make me crazy)

2) They speed up just a little when they come to an intersection with a green light and no traffic in the vicinity. These people want to be sure that they make it through the light before it changes to yellow. They are seeing the “go ahead” and taking the opportunity to do just that. (yea…..this is me)

I rarely drive more than 5 miles per hour over the speed limit and I obey all traffic laws, but I still seem to get stuck behind somebody who is driving like an ass and they just makes me crazy.

I love to hate:

a) People who drive way under the speed limit. Why??? Why do they need to drive slower than the recommended speed? I understand if they are searching for an address or their car is about to fall apart, but this happens way to often for that to be the case each and every time.

b) People who slow down on the ramp to get onto the highway. Now, in my opinion, these folks should not be allowed to operate a vehicle. They obviously have no common sense at all. If you are coming up on traffic moving at 70 miles per hour and are expected to merge with them, you better be getting up to speed, not slowing down. Stupid Fucks.

c) How about the people who are driving slower than the speed limit and then, hit the brakes while going UP HILL!! Seriously, this has happened to me so many times it blows my mind.

d) People who drive at EXACTLY the speed limit and put off the “I am a law abiding citizen” attitude. Like they are going to show you and everyone behind you that the speed limit is XX and we will all drive no more than XX; not one mph more than XX! I swear you can feel their joy in MAKING everyone do the speed limit. Righteous bastards.

e) The people, usually kids, with the stereo speakers that pound and vibrate and they play the music real loud to be sure that it is pounding and vibrating. The other day I was at a stop light and a kid pulls up behind me and his stereo is so loud that my car is vibrating and pounding too and it is so bad it is making me feel sick and I got totally anxious for the light to change. I felt like I had to escape the torture. It was like he was endangering my health. (I assume it was a he…….usually girls have more sense than that).

f) The white (or black for that matter) kid who drive a Cadillac all polished up and scoots the seat back way far so their head is behind the B pillar and plays the thonking music and basically thinks he or she is so cool for acting like a pimp or dealer from the ghetto. Really, I have seen boys and girls doing this and I have no idea why anyone would want to look so stupid and beg that a cop stop them, etc. They deserve anything they get if they can’t even appear to be a law abiding decent citizen.

g) Then there are those who feel they must make you pay for your mistakes. One time I was making a right turn onto a busy road. I stopped and looked and saw no one coming so I pulled out into the near lane. (This was a two lanes each way road) At that exact moment some guy comes around the curve and pops out from behind the tall grass (it was 4 ft tall and I could not see around it) and realizes I am pulling out in front of him. Instead of thinking, wow, she couldn’t see me and pulling into the other lane and driving on, this guy slams on his brakes, makes vile gestures at me and then passes me while cussing and then swerves back in front of me making a total scene so I was sure to know that he was not happy with me or my driving. I get it dude, you’re pissed. Now really, did I deserve this? Was I so far out of line that he needed to have a fit? People are just too eager to be assholes if you ask me.
